• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

recently i have been struggling with collecting video games, which i don't know if it's a struggle or something my ocd says is a struggle. i feel bad about it because we are supposed to be content with what we have and not covet. my ocd makes me think that i am idolizing video games. i'm not going to hell am i? i need some help please.

Here is a definition for covet.

Covet Definition | Definition of Covet at Dictionary.com

I would think one would have to have greedy intentions to truly covet something. I could be wrong but I am going based on the definition. Perhaps one of the others could shed light on this. Alot of this worry, or all of it is probably from the OCD. I hope you can find some peace in your heart soon. May Jesus bring you peace.

It isn't coveting. However, it may be idolising, and only you really know whether it is. I don't think we should decide where your boundaries lie; you must choose these yourself with God's help. Remember, like in Ecclesiastes, MODERATION in all things is the right path. Don't become an ascetic; don't become a materialist. Don't completely give up your passions, don't let them rule you. Those are my thoughts - I hope they are true and helpful!

I have a great love of plants; I know it verges on idolatrous sometimes, so I set myself boundaries, in particular, not buying any new or exotic ones, and instead caring well for the ones I already have. Instead of graduating onto newer and newer pleasures, I can enjoy what I have more deeply and be content. Remember this is just an example!

Also remember that OCD makes all things moral issues, which not all things are. Life isn't (sometimes I think unfortunately!) black and white. Pray to God for wisdom, and trust in him.

I will pray for you.

do you ever feel like the love of plants is obsessive and compulsive? that's the way i feel about collecting things and it's not always videogames. i have different stages of what i feel obsessed about collecting, like at other times it was movies and baseball cards.

My love of plants is not obsessive or compulsive - it is just one of my great delights. Romans8one, could you elaborate? For example, is your collecting motivated by by a thought telling you you must, or is it simply a single-minded focus? Some OCDers hoard things compulsively - I haven't had this, and I don't understand it. Can you identify with hoarding?

Caty, you are right. It is so important not to go to far one way, such as saying that collecting plants is a sin. My problem is that plants are my main passion, eclipsing all others. I would put my plants before God if I didn't control myself - idolatry. Instead of using my passions and God's gifts to glorify God (which is how it should be), I would be practically worshiping plants.

To glorify God, I should be content with what I have, care for it the best I can, and marvel at his amazing creation. I do get new plants every once in a while (following the principle of moderation) because I do not want to make laws for myself where there are none. Anyway, I have enough. The house is a jungle (just the way I like it), and the garden has plenty!

What an odd discussion this has turned into, eh!? But still, it is an important one! I pray that we all sort out the correct answers.

i'd say that it's more of a thought telling me it's a must, but lately it's been better, and I really appreciate everyone's prayers. i just knew this was ocd (lol)!!!
