I have seen the movie Cold Mountain, and is a wonderful movie, although sad when W.P. Inman is killed at the end. My two (2) favorite characters are Ada and Ruby played by Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman. I think they were the perfect fit for those parts. At the very beginning of the movie, it portrays my favorite American Civil War battle, the Battle of the Crater during the Richmond-Petersburg campaign, June 1864-March 1865.
Here's what led up to the battle:
The 48th PA Volunteer Infantry Regiment was in the coal mining business before the outbreak of the Civil War. During the Richmond-Petersburg campaign, they decided to tunnel under Confederate forces and exploding a huge charge of gunpowder to breach the Confederate lines and capture Petersburg.
At sixteen (16) minutes before 5 o'clock in the morning, the mine was detonated. Debris, cannons, and Confederate soldiers exploded up into the air, and a crater, one hundred fifty to two hundred feet in length, about sixty feet in width, and thirty feet deep, was created.
After the explosion, the Union IX Corps commanded by Ambrose Everett Burnside, charged into the Crater, and the Battle of the Crater began.
