CNN Analyst Surprised After Accusing Fox Nation's David Webb of 'White Privilege': 'I'm Black'

Black Radio Host David Webb Told to Check His 'White Privilege' | 93.1 WIBC
CNN's doing a real bang-up job with shaking that 'fake news' label. One of their analysts, Areva Martin, just unwittingly told Sirius/XM radio host David Webb to check his “white privilege” during a discussion on race.
Such an insightful and intelligent remark by Ms. Martin, who apparently didn't realize that Webb is actually BLACK.

After Webb said that expertise and experience are what matter, Martin interjected: “That’s a whole ‘nother long conversation about white privilege, the things that you have the privilege of doing, that people of color don’t have the privilege of.”
Webb shot back: “How do I have the privilege of white privilege?”
“David… by virtue of being a white male you have white privilege.” Martin answered before Webb cut her off: “Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should’ve been better prepped. I’m black.”

20 years ago I moved from Michigan to the DC area. I had listened to a radio show on NPR hosted by a guy named Derek McGinty. Where I was from, everyone of color had an accent of some kind. When I got here and found out Mr McGinty was also a news anchor for a DC tv station, and that he was black, it was a big surprise since he sounded like a white man from Chicago. (Yes, whites in different cities have different accents too)

I am not familiar with Mr Webb, but if he has a historically white accent, I would not be surprised at her mistake.

Okay we can go for that Dave but, still the old "white privilege" thing is getting rather old and pretty worn out. And then to throw it around so much that one actually drops it on a black man -- that just takes it to the Limit. The outer limits.

That sounds like he sounds and talks like a white guy.

I grew up in a small town in southwest MI. The population was about 7000. We had about 10% black, and a few Natives and a few Hispanics. Since it was a factory town, there were a lot of southerners. So in that one town we had a white Chicagoan accent, a few different southern accents, a black accent a Hispanic accent. The Natives almost had the white Chicagoan accent but spoke it with a different rhythm.

The accent is not derived from a location as much as it is from who you grow up with and communicate regularly. Since the various ethnic groups were rather insular, they maintained their accents.
