Clippping Shadows and Highlights

Hey

I'm doing some reading up on photo editing and in one section they talked about editing the histogram so it doesnt clip the highlights and shadows. A few questions, what does clipping mean and how by looking at a histogram can I tell if it is being done, also what effect does this have on a photo.

You've maybe seen and/or taken pictures that were severly over exposed - all whited/bleached out? I have on both accounts... . Anyway, maybe this'll help:
