Cliff Richard

Hi I'm new,

My favorite artist is Cliff Richard. He actually does both secular and Christian music since he is a Christian. His next album out the 17th is Cliff At Christmas. Are there other Cliff fans on this forum?
Cliff has a fantastic voice and has sung many different styles of music. Some may feel that he is too old to stay in competition, but I disagree.
Anyway, I just wondered if other people here love his music too.

I used to love Cliff Richard when I was little. Haven't heard much by him lately, but he is a good artist.

And about the age ... that's completely irrelevant. I don't like this idea some people have that you have to be young. That's just stupid. I know a guy who won't like a band or artist if they're much older than thirty and I really think that's daft. Age has nothing to do with skill. I'll like a musician for the music they make, not their age.

Although the age factor doesn't always prove to be too much of a limiting factor - look at U2, the biggest rock band in the world at the moment, with the youngest band member being 42. Some people see age as a barrier, but that's ludicrous. Talent doesn't come or go depending on how many birthdays one has had.

Excuse my ignorance, but what country does your flag stand for, Buttermilk?
I guess a lot of Cliff's fans are in the U.K. and Australia. Of course, he has plenty in parts of Europe and Asia as well. Actually, in the U.S. and Canada there are quite a few, but here you can ask people and they either don't know him or think he was a 2 or 3 hit wonder! I visited Canada recently. Some knew of Cliff and some didn't.
The problem for Cliff is that the radio stations don't want to play him as much. Sure he gets on shows to promote his albums, but playing the songs on a regular basis is pretty much a must to do really well.
Of course, people can still rally around and get his song to number 1 like when he did The Millennium Prayer! He does really well for someone who doesn't get enough airplay.
It isn't like his songs and singing aren't good enough! They are fantastic!

Buttermilk would be from Scotland.

And I NEVER hear Cliff Richard on the radio, but that'd be because of two factors;

1. The radio station I listen to doesn't play much like what he makes - which is a shame.
2. I don't listen to the radio much any more. I hate it. Too many ads, stupid DJs, and obnoxious bubblegum pop. I prefer to stick to my CDs, cassettes, and videos ... many of which are U2. I should dig my Cliff Richard cassette out.

I didn't know Scotland had a separate flag. One of my English friends seems to like to talk a lot about how united the U.K. is.
It would be great if you can listen to Cliff again!
Years ago there was a Christian station that used to play some of Cliff's music. Too bad it was later sold, and I don't think the new one plays too much if any. I don't listen to a lot of the new stuff on the radio, but I've heard some. Does Australia or Scotland have any of their own older popular artists?

Yeah, Scotland has a separate flag. The United Kingdom flag is comprised of the flags of Scotland, Wales, and England.

I keep on meaning to go searching through all my old cassettes - I've got heaps of stuff there, mainly The Shadows (loved them when I was little) that I really want to listen to again. Hang on a minute ... do I just have a really faulty memory, or was Cliff once in The Shadows at some point?

Australia has some pretty famous artists, but none similar to Cliff, or at least not that I'm aware of. Then again, I'm not much into the Australian music scene. One of our most famous stars, Slim Dusty, a country singer, died earlier this year ... I know that much. I believe he made over 100 records. Personally, I'm mainly into the U2-and-anyone-like-them scene, and rock.

Ah, OK. I've got HEAPS of Shadows cassettes - my Grandad's a big fan and I inherited it off him. Their guitar music is just fantastic. I grew up on them, U2, and Queen.

One thing I just remembered is when I went to New Zealand to visit my father, we were driving around one night with an older radio station on, and this Cliff song came on, and it brought back so many memories of listening to this one Cliff cassette over and over again when I was little. Fun memories. I enjoyed the song just as much when I heard it on the radio, too.

Now I've just got to figure out where that Cliff cassette is ... I've found some of my old ones, but not his ...

The Shadows are doing a final tour soon. It looks like it starts in April.
Cliff is having concerts around that time too.
I hope to get my Cliff At Christmas CD soon.
Glad you enjoy some of Cliff's oldies. I think it is great to have such a variety of era's to listen to!

The Shadows are doing a final tour? I wonder if it's coming to Australia. I'll have to check up on that.

And I used to have this wonderful Cliff Christmas cassette ... and then I lost it! I cannot emphasise how much I looked for that, because it was my favourite Christmas cassette. And it's nowhere to be found! I was sooo peeved about that.

And you're right about having such a variety of eras. I find that with U2, being such a U2 fanlad - all I need to do is swap CDs and it can be like changing bands.

Well, Cliff's Christmas album that is just out has some of the popular songs from before as well as some new ones. It has Mistletoe & Wine I think, Saviour's Day, the Millennium Prayer, Little Town etc. I am picking up mine on Sunday that arrived through the mail. Don't know if any of these are the ones you are familiar with.

Cliff's new album has moved up to number 10 on the charts and The World Tour DVD is doing great still too! His single was released today.

By the way Cliff will be in Australia for different events both on Dec. 31 and January 12...one is tennis to support some foundation to help with bone growth or something.

I enjoyed a few U2 songs as a kid and one since. My brother used to listen to them, but was disappointed in them I think...such as the song I Still Haven't Found what I'm looking for...whatever that is called.

My Dad had recorded someone doing an interview with the female co-star of Two A Penny (a Billy Graham movie Cliff was in in the '60's)...I wasn't born yet!
I had liked what I had heard of Cliff when I was younger especially on Christian radio (which is rare for him to be played on here I gather), but several years ago my brother started buying his music. I then realized all of the different styles he had gone through. I enjoyed them...Living Doll was new to me for awhile, etc. I became a bigger fan of him through the internet and bought a couple of books to learn even more about him. I love his music and even wrote to a local station and they are now playing Little Town!

Rick from "The Young Ones" is a HUGE Cliff Richard fan.

Cliff's latest single peaked at 5 and the album Cliff At Christmas at 9 I believe.
Next year Cliff is doing concerts at the RAH I believe in April, and he plans to promote his next new album out in the fall (autumn to my British friends) in the U.S. I believe.
Barry Gibb has recorded a couple of songs with Cliff & and Chris Eaton wrote a couple of them too I believe.
Cliff is in Australia on the 31 of this month and then recording next year in the U.S. the rest of his album.
Cliff was in the movie Two A Penny which was one of Billy Graham's pictures.
One of Cliff's early famous songs was The Young Ones, which I'm sure most British people know. Isn't the current Young Ones some sort of show or something?
I imagine they took the name from the song!

Well, then, I imagine Cliff might not be thrilled to have his name too connected with them. Most people are negative on Cliff because he is considered too clean. Actually, there are some things that I don't approve of him doing, but I believe he is a true Christian. He became a Christian a long time ago now. He has done a lot of good things as well.
:)
