The Justice Department is reviewing a batch of potentially classified documents found in the Washington office space of President Joe Biden’s former institute.

In a shocking turn of events, some classified documents have been found in one of Joe Biden's private offices. These documents date back to his VP days. How did they get there? Why did nobody notice them until recently? Did Biden know? Can he be held responsible for this? They were supposedly in a locked closet, but that's certainly not secure enough for anything marked SCI.

This calls for an investigation!! I'm sure House Republicans will be happy to provide one, but the DoJ better put in a serious effort too.

At least Biden is co-operating with the investigation. NARA didn't have to subpoena them or even come looking for them. Nevertheless, it needs investigating.

Biden’s personal lawyers sent the documents to the National Archives, which referred the matter to the justice department because of their sensitive nature, with some classified at the Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information level, a source familiar with the matter said.

Merrick Garland, the attorney general, has since assigned the Trump-appointed US attorney in Chicago John Lausch to oversee the investigation alongside the FBI, a second person said. A spokesperson for the justice department declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

From the report, it sounds as if some Classified documents were inadvertently packed in boxes when Biden left the White House. It appears, based on the other papers in the box, that these were inadvertently packed with personal documents and that the boxes had not been opened since Biden left the White House. Granted, this is supposition on my part, based on the facts that have been provided, as well as how the papers were immediately returned to the Federal Government. Not quite the same as when documents are found in desk drawers.

There was no affidavit signed by Biden lawyers claiming that the closet at the Penn Biden Center no longer contained any classified documents before such documents were uncovered.

This says to me that there needs to be a change in the way classified documents are handled. These were in a box locked in a closet?
How did those documents get there and when did they get there?

I agree, there clearly needs to be changes in the way Classified documents are handled in the White House, probably also to include cabinet level offices.

Garland made the right move. As far as we know, who put them there? That's what the special prosecutor should and would establish. Should Joe resign if he was not part of the chain of custody that placed them there? If not, should he still be impeached?

Well, it's gonna be kinda hard for Joe to explain how classified ended up in his garage without him knowing about it, even ignoring the other two locations. But sure, I can wait for the special counsel to look into it. I doubt the Republicans will wait long, though. Investigation is part of the impeachment process.

it's funny watching republicans that spent months whining about witch hunts, and it all being a nothing burger for reasons, are now whining about biden. How quickly they ignore that trump would never have been in trouble if he had simply returned the items as soon as they were found to be in his posession. It's still a problem, but hard to compare finding them himself and by his group and returning them right away vs ignoring requests for months to where he had to be raided to get them back, lied about their posession made up rules and laws to get away with returning and so on.

The Republicans can continue to make the wrong moves as we have seen from the infighting to running on inflation and crime but then offering nothing but investigations. I didn't think so at first, but then I read that he did have a direct hand in packing papers. I don't know who else would've put the documents in his desk drawer - that seems a personal space. Also, he reportedly liked to show visitors his trophies.

The bias of the press is something, it's "infighting" with Republicans but "discussions" with Democrats. We have a corrupt government establishment, and there are principled people who don't want business as usual so they made sure Kevin McCarthy would really tackle the wrongdoing else be ousted. We have a debt ceiling coming up shortly and this will be the test.

The Democrats would have just moved on to some other charge, the concern was not about national security but about getting Trump. Now we have a real national security compromise, Joe kept classified documents in his garage and no his garage was not always locked. Hunter lived there and had prostitutes and foreign nationals as his buddies, who knows how many people had access to the unsecured documents. And the government is frozen, instead of securing and searching all of Joe's residences and offices they are letting Joe's own lawyers hunt around for more documents.

I was referencing the Speaker vote, and if you're calling that crap show just "discussions" then you must think D-day was just a bar fight. And by all means, tell the GOP to shut the government down. That would be another stupid move gone south.
