I noticed there seemed to be no classical threads here. Does anyone like classical music? If so, what are your favorite composers/pieces? I'm kinda new to classical but I enjoy Mozart and Rachmaninoff especially. Does anyone think's it's odd that I like classical but I'm also very into rock?

I am also really into classical and rock. Its not odd at all. The more classical you like, I think the better quality rock you listen to. My favorite song ever is Pachelbel's Canon in D. Me and my friends have a little band and we cover a "rock version" of it :).
I think I fell in love with classical music last spring when I went to see the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra perform Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Schehezerade. It literally took me to another world, I had a whole movie, vivid colors and all, playing in my mind along to the music. And I swear I was not under the influence of mind-altering substances! (Thats what everyone asks me when I tell them about this experiene...."Were you on something?")

I love classical music. I probably have 500 classical music CDs. And no, it isn't weird to like classical and rock, because classical has some of the most rocking, rowdy tunes out there.

My favorite composers are:

Arvo Part
Antonin Dvorak
Philip Glass
Dmitri Shostakovich
Sergei Prokofiev
Sergei Rachmaninov
Pytor Tchaikovsky
John Tavener
Kyrzstof Penderecki
Tan Dun
Toru Takemistu
Johannes Brahms

I could go on & on.

i'm new to classical music myself, but my favorite composers are Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, Pachelbel, Vivaldi, and many more that i can't remember...*laughs*
as for my favorite pieces...i don't really know the names of any of my favorite songs...all i can say is that i very much enjoy the songs from the Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Romeo and Juliet (all by Tchaikovsky)...so, yeah...can't really remember anything else...*scratches head*

Ah, Baltimore, birthplace of Frank Zappa...
Scheherzade's wonderful. No claims are being made here to anything but a limited, superficial knowledge, but I also like Debussy, Mozart and Bach. I've been listening to his cello suites (played by Pablo Casals) and they're amazing. What I think I might start investigating soon is some Palestrina; I've heard little bits on a sampler type CD, and it sounds pretty good. Different from what I've been into before, but there's too much great music to shut yourself off from any of it.

In general, I prefer romantic music over classical music, as the pieces are usually more complex. Composers like Brahms, Mahler come to mind.

I like an occasional opera although I can't understand the words: Wagner, Verdi etc.

I used to like waltzes by the Strauss family but now I find that compared to symphonies they are much less interesting.

Beethoven is my all time favourite. I absolutely love his symphonies especially Eroica, Pastoral, 5th, 9th.

I also like Beethoven's piano concertos, especially his Emperor.

I like Tchaikovsky's ballet music as well and his piano concerto in B-flat.

Who are your favourite orchestras/symphonies?

I like Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan; Cleveland under Szell; Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy; Bernstein; Vienna Philharmonic under Kleiber.
