  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm getting really into Sergio and Odair Assad. They are an amazing guitar duo. I've also been listening to Berta Rojas and Thomas Viloteau; both of which I've seen perform. Berta is a paraguayan guitarist who has had many works commissioned and arranged for her. All of which are performed beautifully. And Thomas, only 23 years old, plays on the level of players twice his age and experience. I would highly recommend these players to any who are interested in the classical guitar.

I'll be honest...guitar is my least favorite instrument, mostly because there's so many people who can strum a few basic chords and get huge amounts of attention, when I've been playing piano for 18 years, can pound out a huge Romantic sonata, and everyone goes "meh." (Yeah, this applies to the piano too.)

Also I get annoyed when I see guitar pieces that are just transcriptions from another instrument.

BUT, I do like a good piece written specifically for classical guitar. Villa-Lobos and Albeniz come to mind.

Willard3,

That can be said with any instrument, no? All instruments can be played poorly - without any skill being required whatsoever.

I see nothing wrong with transcriptions. For example, Bach wrote not a note for the guitar. How sad it would be for his music not to be played on an instrument that seems to fit like a glove!

I’ve been playing since 1976. On a scale of 1 to 10 I am comfortable with 4 level difficulty. It doesn’t matter though. There is plenty of beautiful stuff at that level. Fernando Sor is my favorite. Next Terrega. But then John Dowland also
