  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Church planting question

Hello to all!
As a new person in this forum I have a question, please.

I have read the Statement of Faith on Anabaptism and I have read What is An Anabaptist.
I have been studying Conservative Anabaptist theology for a number of years and I have ordered books and downloaded countless articles.

I have never come to a place where I've studied anything and thought to myself 'That's crazy. I don't believe that'. Perhaps that's due to my Baptist upbringing (distant cousins?).

Because of this, I already consider myself Anabaptist in my heart, if not actually in denomination (I am non-denominational).

As a Church planter, I would like to found a Church on Anabaptist theology and doctrine.

My question: Would it be proper to call myself an Anabaptist or try to make the Church an Anabaptist Church?

Thank you all in advance.

Sam, I admire your desire to plant a new wrok. I have planted churches here in Texas and it is a tough row to how. Never the less I would check with the local Baptist Association. They may be able to tell you if there is an Anabaptist assocoation that may sponcer you or help in some way. In my experience it takes strong people to come into a new work and build to help get it going. It takes alot of money to get a church started without a congegation to support. Good luck my friend

Anabaptist is more of a theological/religious category than a denomination. What Anabaptist materials (Mennonite? Hutterite? Brethren?) have you been studying?

Don't forget Amish, Dunkards, Alliance, Missonary & Evangelical Mennonites( now known as Fellowship of Evangelical Churches...FEC) ;)
The FEC is both Evangelical and Anabaptist in teaching.

The reason why I ask what group your study materials come from is because Anabaptists range from liberal (think Unitrian Universalists) to ultra Conservtive (Amish) and practice everything from Communalism (Hutterites) to self sufficieniency. Theologically different groups reflect Protestant Fundamentalism, German pietism, modern liberalism and - even ancient Anabaptism!

Mountain Man,

I see you are from Tampa, FL. There is a Biblical Mennonite Alliance Church (Palm Grove Mennonite Church) at Sarasota that might could answer your questions. One of the pastors is David R. Miller. I think he would be happy to assist you.

Hope you find the answers you are looking for.

Blessings.

Sam, they derived their name from their enemies. They did not call themselves "anabaptists," but usually something like, "believers." Anabaptist means, baptized again, in Latin. The Roman Catholic church, and the Reformers practiced infant baptism which they rejected. They practiced believers baptism instead. This was usually pouring or immersion.

The anabaptists were sometimes called, "The Radical Reformation," because they did not come out of the RCC and "reform" her teaching, but made a clean break and tried to go back to the first century pattern.
