  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm thinking I might skip out on the big tree and put our smaller tree on a table this year. Or this seems like an idea, too...

I like the table idea because I could put a cloth over it and hide the presents underneath. I don't think Jacob would look under the cloth... he would be more interested in standing and looking at the tree.

Of course the presents are going to be another issue altogether... we're going to have two babies and we have two sets of VERY excited grandparents. My mom's already shipped some stuff and I have no idea where we're going to put it....

Here is a family tradition I grew up with that might help a little. Your little one should be very involved in decorating, from making them to hanging them, all the while letting him know about Christmas, and how the tree stays decorated till (insert day such as 6 sleeps after Christmas). Then what my family did is hang a big silver ball near the bottom of the tree. Young children are fascinated by their reflection in it, and so distracted from the desire to play with other ornaments.

Regular teaching works, too. Use the word "no" as often as you need, but also get toddlers involved. Use scissors to cut out bell shapes or candy cane shapes out of red and green felts, etc. Using kid-friendly decorations helps. If a child puts it there, they are unlikely to take it off and play with it.

One last bit of advice: Use a sturdy base so that youngsters don't knock it over very easily. Other than that, wing it. Millions of parents have been managing toddlers around their Christmas trees for a lot of years. You'll do great!

We started using free standing baby fences. Kept the cat out too. The fence was large enough that I could put the presents out behind it, too, if I wanted, but we generally kept the presents hidden until Christmas morning. And then the fence was gone.

Once the kids got involved in decorating the tree, though, the allure was gone and they didn't really bother the tree.

Tabletop trees work great BUT you'd still have to keep an eye on Jacob, so he doesn't pull off ornaments or pull it down on himself.

Gate off the tree with baby gates. It's not very pretty, but it's functional lol.

Wall trees are another option.

Or just skip the tree! You can still deck the halls and make your house look awesome without having an actual tree, if it's just too much hassle.

I always put the big Christmas tree up, but with plastic ornaments, stringed popcorn, and paper ornaments that son colored. When he got older I put up the glass ornaments.
My friend put up a small Christmas trees with homemade ornaments.
I like your little tree. It's beautiful! He'll love it!!!

The family cat is more the bain of my life when it comes to the Christmas tree.
Yeah, we got a kitten a couple of months who is as wild as can be. We are dreading what he will do to the Christmas tree.

I agree to baby-gating the tree off. Let the little one touch things with your assistance so that he gets the idea of it OR have a tree that is smaller this year and put it up so that he can't touch it.

ETA: Just don't leave it within grasp and then spend all Christmas saying NO NO NO NO NO. Ugh. Super stressful and depressing for the whole family.

(Snickers) When all is silent, and the kitten is not around? I would place a bet she/he is up in the tree somewhere! They LOVE to climb. and at times bat the limbs to see what will fall....lol in order to ATTACK!

Now that our cat is older? I just pick up the squirt bottle, and she can't fly out of that room fast enough. Heck, just going for the squirt bottle makes her run. Its awesome! (lololol!)

Squirt bottle for the cat here, too! Only for when she's howling at the door to go out and isn't allowed (after dark). She's learned that as soon as she sees that bottle, she'd better run :)

I had a cat who knocked down our Christmas tree multiple times. But my son never did lol. Looks like CATS are the real culprits here!

With our girl it went like this...

First Christmas - she was 8 months old and barely mobile. No special precautions taken.
Second Christmas - She was 20 months old and all over the place. We baby gated off the room and she only went in supervised.
Third Christmas - She was 32 months old and all over the place. We baby gated off the room and got her a little Christmas tree of her own to decorate/screw up. Worked like a charm...lol
Fourth Christmas - New baby is 4 months old and not at all mobile. Girl is almost 4, and we're probably gonna do the dual tree thing again.
