  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

sure isnt what it use to be... it's so commercialized now. has no feeling to it. most of it dont even sound like christmas music. like the people only did it to make a buck. such a pity

there are some exceptions, like martina mcbrides "white christmas" cd. good stuff. :)

Last year on Christmas Day I listened to a streaming broadcast of traditional and newly-written Christmas music performed in the Goth and Industrial styles. It was certainly different, that's for sure. I'll probably do that again this year; it was refreshing to hear something new being done with it (although I think the prize still has to go to Emi Shinohara for the Japanese-language version of "Ave Maria").

The only Christmas Music I'll listen to (if I listen to it at all) is the classic stuff that has the true meaning of christmas in it. Like Silent Night, Mary Did You Know, Emmanuel, The First Noel, Oh Holy Night, Carol of the bells, etc.

They are much prettier and have real meaning to them. I can't listen to something that doesn't mean something.

A lot of the songs that are released over here in Great Britain at Christmas are meant to be Christmas-themed, but a lot of them aren't. There are some songs that are released at Christmas which are Christmas-themed, for example, this Christmas, Mark Owen is releasing a song called 'Hail Mary' which is obviously Christmas-themed.

Brian Wilson released a pretty fun Christmas album this year called All I Really Want For Christmas.

My personal favorites are:

the Sufjan Stevens Christmas EPs
Pedro the Lion - First Noel 7"
Duvall - O Holy Night
Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas

and my dad basically plays the Mannheim Steamroller christmas album on loop throughout December, so by the time Christmas comes around I am usually pretty tired of it. In a vacuum, I'm sure it's not as bad as I think it is, but not the best thing to hear over and over and over again.

Oh wow, I'll have to look into that.

Is it a bad sign that whenever I ask someone to get me the Clay Aiken Christmas CD for Christmas they laugh at me?

I agree. I don't like the Christmas music that's about commercialism rather than the true meaning of Christmas. Quite possibly my least favorite Christmas song is Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I hate that song with a passion. By far my favorite Christmas CD is The Christmas Album, by the Barra MacNeils. It has one of the most beautiful versions of O Holy Night I've ever heard, and Once in Royal David's City sung in Gaelic, which is also beautiful.

With regards to traditional xmas songs. I once watched this amazing choir on tv about 9 years ago made up of students from Spelman and Morehouse colleges. It was some of the best Chrostmas music I've evr heard.

trans-siberian orchestra.

The absolute best Christmas albums to be made in the last quarter century are by the TSO. And to the Manheim Steamroller guy... I've heard them... they're okay, but TSO, man, TSO is where it's at.

Also, Michael Crawford's rendition of "Mary Did You Know" is the absolute best non-TSO Christmas song out there, imo.

Don't ever, ever, give me secular "Christmas" songs, like Jingle Bells, though. I gotta have some meaning.

TSO is sooo good. Hubby and I went to a concert on Nov 28th. They were wonderful.

Manheim Steamroller is good too, very nice for Christmas Eve.

But IMO Bing Crosby is Christmas. I love his voice. Hubby is very understanding of my crush on him. I have every Christmas album he ever had. He is sooo cute!!

I know I need help, that isn't new information!!!!!!
