Hmm... that seems like a rather simplistic statement. I'd say the Christian epistemology should be based on the Bible, but not that Christianity itself is based on the Bible. The Bible communicates the life and message of Christ, so in one sense it serves as the word of God to us who live without the immediate presence of Christ to serve as a guide to His will (when coming to Christ - the Holy Spirit does also guide a believer to all truth), and so it rightly sits as the attestation of what a Christian believes, but Christianity will always be centered around the cross and Christ.

I heard the following on Moody the other day:

"Christianity is based on the Bible."

Funny, I always thought that Christianity was based on the person and work (re headship) of Jesus Christ.

The above quote sounds more like Mormons and Muslims.

Peter

it is true, but without accepting the authority of the scriptures, we cannot really accept the authority of Christ, as Moses testified to Him.

Tell me something: how do we know most of what Jesus taught? Where is it written?

Christ ascended circa 33 AD. The first NT text was written circa 67 AD. The Church, Christianity, Orthodoxy, grew, thrived, flourished for 34 years prior to the first epistle, never mind the first Gospel account.

It took nearly 60+ years for the final book to be written, then another 200 or so years for those books to be agreed upon.

Why do we have the scriptures? Because they agree with Christian teaching. Those books that disagreed with the oral tradition of the Church were rejected.

I would suggest that Christianity is not only based on the Bible, but is in fact based on the Bible alone. Those sects who add their own traditions to the account of Scripture, only serve to diminish and diffuse its saving substance. Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, stands at the center of the Word.

Tim,

Where in your Bible, do you find this belief? Where did Jesus come and die for his Bible? Where does it say that the Bible is the Bride of Christ? Where does it say that the Bible is the Body of Christ? Where does it say that Christ is the Head of the Bible?

Christianity, the imitation of Christ, is based on Christ, not a book. Your expression of Christianity, having severed itself from the very "sect" through whom the God you say you worship chose to save the Holy Scriptures (gee, God trusted them...why not you?), has a book alone. And disunity all together.

I don't mean to discuss the importance of scripture. That would be foolish. But to say that Christianity is based on it is a misnomer.

In order...

1. Christ, the promised Messiah, is made flesh and dwells among us.
2. This same Christ is crucifed and resurrected under his own power.
3. He ascends.
4. On the Jewish feast of Pentecost the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, is given and the Church is founded.
5. His followers spread the gospel and the teachings of the apostles. To assist those who cannot be reached, they right letters.

The letters were written out of Christianity. In other words first came Christianity, then the scriptures came out of it.

do you believe Christianity would not and could not exist without the Bible? i believe Christ still did what He did, whether or not its written down.

That is a very large cum hoc fallacy.

I'd like to see where in the Bible it says by grace through only faith.

Post hoc...

I can throw the ball x feet. When I put on a hat I threw the ball a little further. Wearing a hat helps me throw the ball better.

cum hoc

for the last 20 years my annual income has risen. In that same time I've had 6 children. Therefore, having children increases my income.

I'm not sure how either of these apply to the post. I listed historical facts in chronological order.

1. Christ, the promised Messiah, is made flesh and dwells among us. (c. 3 BC)
2. This same Christ is crucifed and resurrected under his own power. (c. 33 AD)
3. He ascends. (c. 33AD)
4. On the Jewish feast of Pentecost the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, is given and the Church is founded. (c. 33 AD)
5. His followers spread the gospel and the teachings of the apostles (c. 33-97 AD). To assist those who cannot be reached, they write letters. (c. 67-97 AD)

It seems that the dates given for the writing of the gospels and letters listed above can arguably be earlier (which I tend to agree with) or later depending on who you are reading. :)
