  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok. Here I am. Delicate stage of life. A pretty busy life, but I have enough time the same in order to fulfill an old dream: writing a thriller (I have always been a thriller lover :) ).
I have just had this idea of writing a thriller where the detective is a Christian. In my country Evangelical Christians are a minority and it could be a way to talk about us in a different way. I am just wondering if anyone else, in any other country, had the same idea.

What do you think of it?

You know, during my life I had the misfortune to meet mentally disordered people. I am a psychopatic expert, unluckily.....but it could be a luck after all. I have got plenty of material for the character of the villain. :)
Besides, I have always been convinced that there is a spiritual root behind mentally disordered people, as they are all the same in certain aspects, so similar, all of them.

Any suggestions?
Any other thriller-yellow books lover around here?

By mentally disordered people do you mean the mentally ill? I hope you know mentally ill does not mean evil. It has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain, but personally I know from dealing with my own experiences it has to do with the person's attitude, beliefs, values, with spiritual forces between the Lord God and the devil in that person's life. I have a mental illness and so does my sister. My illness was caught early when I was a child, I was about 11. I had a lot of trouble in school, I was a dreamer and had trouble getting my work done, the others kids picked on me, teased me, made fun of me. I hated school. I liked fairy tales and wanted to be a fairy tale princess. I was into art, my mom put me in art lessons and I really like art, anything beautiful, flowery, colorful, sweet romantic,

I have seen mystery shows on TV, I really don't care for mystery because someone dies a horrible death in the beginning. I write stories and I do put tragedy in them, but I try not to torture my characters too much with loss of loves ones.

I think you have a good goal. I think 'Christian' film making, (or storytelling) Is at it's best when it functions as a parable. IE and entertaining story that illustrates a truth. From that point of view a story such as the one you describe would certainly be possible.

Please keep in mind that a fatal flaw, encountered by many trying to author 'Christian' works is that they forget their protagonist much arc in order for the story to be interesting. If your protagonist ends up at the end of the film exactly as he/she was at the beginning of the film than no change as come and odds are that you work will just come off sounding preachy. Flawed characters, who learn from their own actions and from the situations they are thrust into are the foundations of good stories.

One thing you might want to consider is taking a proverb for the root of your story. I have done a thriller based on Prov 17:11 "Evildoers foster rebellion against God; the messenger of death will be sent against them." There are tons of other proverbs that conjure up wonderful story ideas.

Best of luck!

Dear sister,

I apologize if my words have in any way hurt you. I didn't mean to and probably there is a misunderstanding. I am NOT telling that ALL the mentally ill people are evil.
First of all, there are many different kinds of mental illnesses and I am not, by any means, putting them all together. I have experienced in my life only two kinds of personality disorder: Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (this last one has been erased in the last edition of DSM).
I am not telling that they are all evil, as the degree of the disorder is different from person to person.
But, as I know by my own experience, as I have suffered on my own skin, the consequences of their actions ARE evil.
Of course they deny any responsibility. It is never never their fault, but always someone else's fault.
They have taught me that I must put myself in discussion if I want to keep my sanity....because it is a sure sign of mental illness to feel you are never wrong.
Of course there is a spiritual root, but I would never underestimate the power of the free will. We all have to fight.
The Borderline people I have met have reduced me and my life to crumbles but they were able of great feelings and great acts of generosity and repentance and great passion.......until the next mood swing. The chaos of their feelings is so destructive on anyone DARES to love them.
The Borderline people I have met all share a past history of abuse, especially childhood abuse. So they have all my compassion, but I will never be so naive again to stay near to any of them again.
The Narcissists, on the contrary, have never shown the minimal sign of repentance. No feelings, no mercy. Pure cruelty.
Is this evil? I don't know. The Narcissist I have met had a childhood abuse history as well. But in the Borderline remain a sign of their soul; I have not seen any in the Narc.
I am talking for myself and this is just my opinion and my experience. a
And this is why if I will finish my novel the villain character will be based on my experience. And I don't mean any offence: if I am offending someone, I ask the moderators to erase this thread. Iask the forgiveness of Gos and of all the people I could offend with my words: but He knows they are simply a consequence of my experience.

Dear sister, I do not know what kind of illness you are experiencing, but I do hope and pray that you are having the right treatment and that the Healer of our souls will touch you and free you completely.

Great idea, brother! Actually I have started from a statement taken from the Talmud. But you are right...the book of Proverbs is PERFECT

The Christian walk is a process......so the character will for sure be able to reflect about many things during the novel.
Thank you for your wisdom :) may God bless you
