Among all the symbols of Christianity the Cross is now under attack by a christian entity (American Clergy Leadership Conference).

Should the Cross be banished from our Churches as Hezekiah had destroyed the brasen serpent?

Does the cross hold a deeper meaning than the brasen serpent?

Seesh. The cross is a symbol of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It is a symbol of freedom, not an idol.

I swear, if they get rid of the cross but keep the flag in their churches, I'm gonna scream.
I'm like you the cross is the place where Christ put my sins. It is where I was given life. It is where God died that we might have attonement. To remove it what will it be replaced with a <>< ? Not that that is a bad symbol I have one on the back of our family van. It just doesn't say it all like the cross does. Why I even glory in it.

1 Corinthians 1:17-18
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
AMEN!

Given the ACLC's association with the Unification Church, I am hesitent to call it fully Christian.

Hey!

A Christian entity????

by what definition? Just because they say so????

ACLC was founded by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon....

"As soon as a person believes in Jesus, Satan can invade his body" (December 25, 1974)

"I have talked with many Masters, including Jesus... They have subjected themselves to me in terms of wisdom.... (April 1965)

A Christian entity????

I don't think so.

I am all for the "empty" cross.

The catholics love putting Jesus on that cross being crucified, and while his death is always a good reminder, that wasn't the end of it, since he rose.

For me to see the cross is bittersweet. Literally.

I'm filled with absolute joy and gratefullness because if Christ hadn't died on the cross, I'd enjoy an eternity of being an extra-crispy human. But at the same time I see it and am so greatly saddened, because of the absolute pain He had to go through for me and for you....................

It doesn't matter to me if they take the cross down at a particular church - His sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten by me or my children...............

I have always favored the dove, which is a representation of the transcendent Holy Spirit myself. But the cross is far too ingrained in Christianity to be eliminated by anyone. That is my belief...as long as there is Christianity, the cross will be it's symbol.

Guess how dumb I am? I've been a nominal Christian my whole life, born-again for less than 3 years and learned LAST WEEK that the dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit, not Peace. Whew - where have I been?

Interesting about the fish symbol - I used my fish to announce to my friends, Christian, atheist, agnostic, lazy, whatever, that I had become a committed Christian. I think they know what I meant. I like the idea of a cross, though!

It has occured to me that we see too many uses of these symbols in the form of cheap costume jewlry. Just about everyone is wearing some type of Christian "trinket". Some of it is hung arround the neck, worn as an ear ring or is even tatooed to any ole part of the human body.
While I am not in favor of ever removing any symbol that reminds us of what Christ has done for us, I am not in favor of any symbol being used as a "talisman" for it seems to me that many only wear it for "good luck".
Anyone have a nice lapel pin or tie clasp that I can wear to church service tomorrow?

In Israel last December I got a messianic symbol , like sonworshipper uses as his avatar! I wear it on a chain with my cross and the two never leave my neck.

I know what you mean by fashion symbol! Madonna? Come on - luckily they will dump it as quickly as they picked it up.

I used to wear a small gold cross necklace. But after having a discussion about it on another Christian board...they brought up the second commandment and how crosses could be grouped in that "thou shalt not"...so I haven't worn it a lot lately.

I'm not saying that that's what it says. But, I had enough doubt to leave it out...so to speak.

Awesome post ten-k. It's not what's on the outside but what's on the inside that counts.
Personaly though, I am conserned that folks like Madonna et al are sending a very confusing message to a world that needs Christ. While she wears the cross one must assume that she is making a statement that she can do any immoral deed there is and display it to the world while shameing the Church.
People really do look at our walk. It is a heavy burden to bear as we carry our cross while others that openly wear it continue to not walk accordingly.
