Hello everyone,

I am on this website in the hopes that perhaps I can be less ignorant of Christianity. But I do need help on a class assignment for college. I am supposed to do a "community Immersion project", and I hope that this will suffice for that. To me, discrimination based on religion is something that is very important, and is what I chose to do. If you could you leave a response with around five stereotypes/misconceptions that you believe atheists hold about Christians in general. I am also asking atheists on another website about stereotypes about atheists by Christians. I am hoping to share your results with them and their results with you. Like I said, you don't have to, but I would certainly appreciate this, since this is for one of my classes in college.

Thank you, and have a nice day! :)

You'll probably need to do better than asking people on an atheist forum and on a Christian forum for your assignment, but here goes.

- anti-intellectual
- anti-science
- anti-personal growth
- cherry-picking of the Bible
- haters of people not like them

All of these stereotypes are born out of ignorance about Christians and the Christian message. If anyone looked at Christians and came away with this conclusion, then they didn't look hard enough.

- There have been, and still are, brilliant Christians who embrace logic, reason, and critical thinking.
- There have been, and still are, Christians in various fields of science.
- There are plenty of Christians who continuously strive to improve themselves.
- There are many Christians who take the Bible too seriously to cherry-pick it. The most common accusation I hear about cherry-picking is born out of ignorance of the Bible itself, what the Old Testament is supposed to mean for us. The fact of the matter is that Judaism itself says that the Law is only for the Jews, but there are some universal laws repeated in it that are for everybody. A lot of people unfortunately don't know this, including Christians and atheists. I've found that some atheists choose to disregard this fact when confronted with it, I suspect it is because they do not want to accept it.
- Lots of Christians believe in loving the sinner, while hating the sin. Many people of liberal persuasion conflate hating the sin with hating the sinner. Jesus didn't. Jesus' life showcased loving the sinner, yet hating the sin time and again. That's what a good Christian should strive to do.

I don't know if you want details or what, but here's a succint list of attitudes I've encountered. A lot of atheists think we Christians:

1. have never really thought deeply about our beliefs - that we're Christian just because that's what our upbringing taught us;

2. are anti-science;

3. are only Christian because we fear hell;

4. are bigots, and are hateful of people who believe differently or live differently;

5. think we're more moral than others (which is a little off-base because Christianity is for sinners :))

Welcome to CF, hope you stick around. :wave:

Most seem to think Christians are just the product of the home they were raised in.

Most seem to think Christians are looking at everything with a lot of preconceived ideas and are not open minded enough.

Christians seem to them to be hypocritical (which might be true of the Christians they have met).

Most do not see a contrast between themselves and Christians (which might also be true).

Since they miss seeing the Logic in what god is doing they assume Christians must be illogical.

I think the biggest misconception of Christianity in general is that it was somehow always "imposed" upon & warping a cultural identity. While the Gospel of salvation is for all cultures, there are many cultures it has helped shape indigenous character also. Many Eastern Christian cultures have been threatened or eliminated in the for the last 1500 years to the present.

The Armenians: Armenian Genocide

The Armenians of Nagorno karabakh: NKR Office in Washington, DC

The Assyrians: Assyrian Christians - the official source of news, information and relief efforts for the Assyrian community worldwide

The Syrians: Wiping Out the Christians of Syria and Iraq to Remap the Middle East: Prerequisite to a Clash of Civilizations? | Global Research

The Greeks: http://www.greece.org/genocide/quotes/ also: Welcome to the Hellenic Genocide

The Coptic (Egyptian) Christians: Encyclopedia Coptica: The Christian Coptic Orthodox Church Of Egypt

Ancient Christian cultures elsewhere (not currently threatened as far as I know);

Malankara Church of India: Malankara Orthodox Church

Ethiopia: The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

There are others of course.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I plan to collect the data from both Christians and Atheists, and present the common stereotypes within the next three hours. If you have any final thoughts, they would much be appreciated! :) Again, thank you to anyone who has commented, and anyone that is going to comment.

Hello. Ive been talking to professed Atheists for a few decades now so heres my answer :

a. Stereotypes atheists typically have of Christians : 'They'll believe anything' / They believe in something equivalent to Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny / They think we all come from religious families who raised us up in the Religion and therefore we have become robotic and cant think for ourselves / They think we accept the Christian Faith on blind faith and The Bible because it has crinkly pages or because Someone told us its the truth / they think that Science discredits the Christian Faith / They think that Christians 'grovel' beneath a Creator they cant see or experience / They view Christians as whimpy and weak / They don't think Christians think logically or rationally . They think Christians are wasting their time and life by living upright and trying to be moral since 'there is no God' .

b. Misconceptions atheists typically have of the Christian Faith/Theism :
They think it isn't scientifically provable that a personal intelligent Theistic Creator is absolutely necessary for what we have as effects left over from creation / They think there are no world reknown Scientists who are Christians or Theists / They think that Cosmic Evolution , Abiogenesis, and Macro Evolution is science when it is pseudo science masquerading as real science / They laugh at a Christians Faith that he has yet don't want to talk about their faith that requires enormous faith that blind random Materials brought a personal Universe into existence from nothing and that Materials gave us our NON-material entities such as Mind, Will, Emotions, Love, Reason, Logic, and Abstract Thinking which is the epitomie of illogic / They think that God needs a Creator because God created the Universe / They think that Christians are less than intelligent , logical, and possess no ability to think for themselves / They think that an all loving God created Evil / they think that they can live as they like rejecting God and mocking him all their life without any moral accountability...yet they cant understand why a good God would send people to eternal hell / They claim they don't believe in God but they use his name virtually every day of their life and oftentimes in a personal way/ They think they are generally 'good' people who have no need for a Saviour or even to change any of their ways because they like whom they've become . They somehow think that if there is a moral Creator to whom they are responsible to in the final analysis, that they will fare pretty well because they've got enough good works on their list to cancel or cover the bad things they've done in life. In general, they resent Christians, churches, absolute moral laws to live by , a cross displayed, or prayers in public, etc....because it challenges the way they want to live and they are a reminder that they have a dark side to their personality ., the same that we all have. In specific, they look at genuine Christians who choose to live right and dislike that because it makes them feel insecure and it convicts their chosen less than moral lifestyles. They realize that most Christians know they are caught up in a charade of playing a professed 'atheist' when all along they know from the evidence of creation as well as intrinsically that it always takes a personal , intelligent, information Source for the personal, intelligent, information-based lifeforms that are on earth and particularly Human Beings .

Ive debated MANY professed Atheists face to face and on the Internet which is where I formulate my above opinions from. Also, I was a professed Atheist myself for some 10 adult years and used to run with the atheist Gang on a daily basis .

If you have any followup questions, feel free to ask me. Regards.

Well- this is a good list. I would add that believers aren't seen as intelligent by some.

I'll post a link to it once I've finished the assignment.

If you are comfortable to share your findings in public, it would be interesting to read. It is sensible to wait for grader's feedback so you can incorporate that in your conclusion.

I hope this research inspires you to investigate further what motivates people against each other on the basis of personal belief. There must be some very profound observations to make.

Here's the post where people responded to Christian Stereotypes

Seems like most of them agree with most of the stereotypes. Was hoping they'd be a bit more generous, but oh well. It's a very tiny sample of people from both sites though.
