Christian Song Writing

God has blessed me with the gift of song writing, and I've dedicated it to glorify His name within my church.

I'd love to discuss Christian song writing with other like-minded people.

How do you get your in spiration?
Can you show us some of your lyrics or share your songs with us?
How long have you been writing?
Are there any tips you'd like to pass on?

I'll be keenly awaiting your replies

I've written one song. So I don't think you can consider me a christian songwriter. But my inspiration is from where I'm at, right now. It's called blind side. It's about how I was lost right out the view of the love of God. Confused by thoughts of what to believe. But I eventually found myself right in front of the greatest love there was. Some see to believe, I believe to see.

I've been playing guitar about 3 years now, but have just started getting into songwriting.

I don't know if you would describe my style as "Chrstian" though. I don't do worship songs, but I try to put my beliefs into my writings. I'm currently working on one called "Untitled" which is about abortion.

I can't put myself in the mood to write. It's something that for me just comes... not that it comes a lot, I have to be patient.

I have been a songwriter almost all my life. When I was born again, the Holy Spirit and the Bible was all the inspiration I needed.

I can sit down and make up a song as any songwriter should be able to do....but I found that without direct inspiration and prompting of the Holy Spirit that those songs were not very good in comparison

In the last few years, most of my songs are the Words of the Bible put to music. You just can't go wrong when it's God's word, huh?

So if I could offer any advice it would be this. Just let inspiration happen...do a lot of reading...and then you must discipline yourself to sit down with a pencil and paper and express what you feel or think

In other words...just write it out.

Hope that helps.

Shalom!

One thing I like to do is make up Christian lyrics to songs I already know how to play.
For example, I changed the lyrics of Phish's "Sample in a Jar" to be a song about the Resurrection of Christ. I also make up lyrics for "Touch of Grey" by the Grateful Dead. I like to do this because you can pick a great song which is already composed (i.e. you can know if it sounds great or not) and then make it better by adding Christ to it :) Its a great thing to do when you're feeling down.

I enjoy writing both lyrics and poetry, although I don't think much of it is any good. I don't show it to many people, but when I do, they tend to think it's good ... I disagree, but maybe I'm just being hard on myself.

I don't necessarily write Christian lyrics per se, I just write about whatever comes to mind. Most of my lyrics tend to have Christian themes or are commentary on the world as I see it. Those two themes in some of my songs have gotten combined. I'm heavily influenced by U2 and I wish I could write like Bono ... any good U2 fan would probably spot the influence in some of my songs if they looked close enough. Although the songs that most outwardly show the influence are probably my worst works.

I've tried to put some of my songs to guitar, which has worked semi-successfully in my opinion, but now my guitar's gone way out of tune, I'm hopeless at tuning it, and my tuner is rather poor, so I've put things on hold for the moment.

If anyone's interested in reading any of my lyrics, I could post a couple of songs ...

That is an interesting definition but there is no reason why a "skill" writer can't be inspired.

It seems to me that the only difference between the two definitions you mention is experience and perseverance....although I do agree that someone with "skill" could write an un-inspired song.

Ive been writing lyrics for about a year now. I get my inspiration from everyday life, I always try to find God in life and my songs come out to be mostly about a person trying to find God and what happens afterwards. One song me and my friend wrote goes something like this...

This world has nothing to offer
Emotions are tenser, harder
Nothing it has is of worth
Evil has a new birth
No amount of fame or fortune
Can fill the emptiness inside
Who knows the emptiness inside?
Nothing you say or do
Can satisfy the longing
That I’ve been holding
The only time that things will be right
Is when we end this fight
when we ascend into the sky.
No more worries, by God’s side

a tip to new writers,...dont give up. God will always give u something to sing about.

Hey guys... I think its awesome that you all are so interested in songwriting... There are a few things that the Lord has shared with me in my journeying in to writing and singing prophetically for Him... I will share a few...

The music should always follow the revelation, not vice versa... the most important thing will always be the WORDS... and their meaning... they hold the power of life and death, remember?! HAHA...

Secondly, stay away from humanistic songs... sooooo many Christian artists are content to sing about ME and US and where WE are, and the plight of man... although sometimes that is important, where is the victory in that? How can the Lord speak life and truth when all we do is basically write about our failures? I think God is raising up a generation of worshipers that walk in victory and speak prophetically in to the church from a heavenly perspective rather than a human-wordly perspective... does that make sense?

Anyway, those are a few big ones... I'll share some more later on! Keep writing but more importantly, keep listening!

How do you get your in spiration?
I dunno, I guess i just sit down and write.. it doesn't take much or long for me, only about 5 minutes to write the song; 15 for the music....

Can you show us some of your lyrics or share your songs with us?
I'll give that some serious thought :) There's a good chance though... You/I could also record the songs... But that may be to scary for some people 9points at self) ;)

How long have you been writing?
Well, I wrote for about 1.5 years and completed over 800 songs; some 300 of them have music.... But since then I've kinda stopped since I started writing my book, about one year ago...

Are there any tips you'd like to pass on?
i think the main thing is to have your message and the "plot" of the song down before you start writing. Then write it all the way through, even if it's really bad, you can always edit (NOTE: You most likely wil not be that great (even if you think you are) when you start, practice and time will fix you up nicely). Have your the way you want it to sound, and kinda sing it as you go along, this helps greatly with writing music as well..... I tend to get a song stuck in my head (not at all times though) then write a song with that tune, changing it when it's time to write some music so it's totally my own...

Another thing, if you have alot of land or room to get away, go off by yourself and just sing. make everything you say and think flow together in a song, it will get easier and easier and sound better and better as you go. That tends to help out greatly :) Though people think you're a bit crazy ;)

But best of luck to everyone, and may you glorify the King with your music :)

i guess i am the other kind, but in a way you are lucky cause you can at least make the music...i feel compelled to write songs and I do, but i don't sing well most of the time and can't play an instrument...so i never get to do anything with them...

looks like a good site for christian songwriters

click here for link to "ChristianSongwriting.org"

I was especially interested in some of the articles
on the main page about the psychology of songwriting. Like this line:

""He explains the rostromedial prefrontal cortex is not only where we seem to interpret music, it has also been identified as a region that plays a role in directing motion. As the brain perceives music, he says, it could
also be sending out signals to groove""

I say the best SONG-writers are the hyper-basic ones. Ya'll don't confuse that with "moronic" (although there have been those!) but what I'm saying is this;

All writing is a form of higher communication. Songwriting is different in that the message you are communcating is comprehended better if it is brief and somewhat repetitive.

Example; I love a radio preacher named Steve Brown. He can say more in his 15 minute show than most preachers do in an hour.....Or is it that I can remember what he said better BECAUSE it is brief and to the point?

Some songwriters like to make beautiful art and I appreciate their work. These songs aren't usually meant to communicate to very large audiences because they are done for the writer's pleasure. Great!

Then there are songwriters who have something to say to the world. They know the meaning of what painters call "negative space" and remove any clutter that distracts from the point they want to make. They understand the language of music and have mastered writing songs in a way that the largest possible audience can not only recieve the message but like the music at a
subliminal level also.

Have you ever liked a song that you didn't really want to like at first? Like that Susan Vega song about the cafe? If you know who Susan Vega is then you can hum it in your sleep

It just starts digging into your subconscious and won't let go.

THAT is what I call "deep" because it is demanding your brain's attention at a level you can't control. I think this is what many of the worldly songwriters know how to do. They are speaking of some pretty base things in humanity already.

If we want to call to someone's spirit....we should write/perform in a way that the natural man might not always understand...but his spirit can't resist. This is what makes music so powerful. Our enemy has been getting away with it for years and it's time we take back this ground for the ancient classical Masters who were men of faith who held the forefront of the arts for centuries.

Let's throw the box away, ok? Let's be creative and imaginative! Break every rule of "common" wisdom by being wiser in the ways of the Lord and still striving for excellence BECAUSE of it.

If christian songwriters can make WORTHY statements in such a way that a listener can't resist listening...we will change the world.

Or we can just keep repeating what the choir wants to sing and that's cool too....someone is called to do that and it is SUCH an important calling in ministry

I've been thrashing out lyrics now for about 16 years, at the rate of about two a month, though there is drought and there is flourishing, as anyone likely to be interested in this thread would know. Eventually some get to have music put to ‘em; an even smaller number of ‘em get to be performed in public. Recently, a choir at our church performed a song of mine at our indoor and outdoor carols services; it’s about all the stuff to do with Christmas that you never see on Christmas cards. This little informal grouping is also learning another one of mine, which is intended to function in a way similar to the Penitential Rite in the Catholic Mass.

I don’t claim to be a Christian song writer; I’m a Christian who writes songs. I don’t claim any particular spiritual inspiration for ‘em either, not wishing to blame God for everything that crawls out of my mouth. I’ll write about anything. I think the only thing you have to have is the desire to tell the truth. I like to hope that everything I write is something that God would take to be honouring to Him, though I don’t write praise and worship stuff, it’s far more likely to be hand-to-hand combat with Him than that, though I think He can cope.

Sometimes it’s about stuff that annoys me (McDonalds, the power that the lottery has over people’s lives, low self-esteem as an excuse for every bit of swinish behaviour we care to indulge in). Other times it’s what I think is humour, though of a fairly lowbrow order – a love song with all the imagery taken from pro wrestling, for example.

The lyrics always come first, and I don’t think I’ve ever finished a lyric I’ve been satisfied with that’s taken less than six drafts. It can take a long time, crafting this sort of stuff, because I try to avoid cliché, amongst other reasons. I see too much cliché-infested Christian song writing claiming the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and it annoys me.

I’ve used scripture all along – putting bible stories in contemporary settings is something I’ve always done, but recently I’ve been turning to the Minor Prophets and the Psalms because of the amazing way in which they address contemporary issues.

The young feller who initiated this thread asked for advice. Here’s a couple of bits.

Another person suggested that reading a lot was a good idea. I absolutely agree with this; the paper can be a good source of ideas. Another thing to bear in mind is that there’s no eleventh commandment saying you always have to write as yourself. It’s good fun to write from the perspective of someone (or something) else – I’ve been an angel who can’t figure out why Jesus let’s us get away with desecrating his birthday the way we do, for example, or a TV set bagging the audience for their slack-jawed submission to it – and you might be able to put something across with more impact as someone else. Don Francisco’s song where he tells the story of the crucifixion from the perspective of the good thief is an excellent example of this technique. It’s on his live album, and I don’t even know if you can still get it.

One other suggestion would be to resist the temptation to preach. A difficult one for us Christians, perhaps, but it generally doesn’t come across all that well, to my mind at least. Don’t give up just because your first efforts aren’t all that wonderful. As a beginner, you’re in a similar position to that of a baby learning to talk. Have a notebook for getting your ideas down, and don’t throw anything out. Something that doesn’t come together today might fall into place in a couple of years’ time.

I hardly feel in a position to offer advice, but you asked for it. Good luck.

I love to write songs and/or poems alot....Here are some of my stuff :)

I have tried and tried.
cant continue living this lie
My life a lie i try to live
but cannot stop from straying away from you
this emtpy hole i try to bury or fill in
but it falls through everytime
the Flames burn my heart everytime i try and try
I want to understand what is my sole purpose for my life
I want to know, i Want to be with you
The love that you share,
The forgivness you give
I want to experience that
Through my many hardtimes
Through the roughtimes

Life is a good inspiration. What happens in your life, in the lives of those close to you.

If you play an instrument, keep that and a notebook nearby whenever possible. Sometimes just messing around on an instrument may give you ideas.

Though to be honest, I've only dabbled in songwriting a bit, and I stink. Haha. But I guess for me, sometimes there's something I want to say that no song I know of says in a satisfactory way.
So... I just put those thoughts to words as they come... and put those words to a tune.

I guess... I don't so much write songs as sing what I think...
But I should write some of it down sometime, haha. I forget everything and have to start from scratch- bad habit. Avoid such frustrations with a good pen and some paper. ^_^

In reading this song....

Walk Away From Love[/quote]
Am Dm
Standing here, on the edge of eternity
Em Asus2
With the thoughts of losing you
My heart is crying out, i fall to my knees
I cannot bear this truth

Chorus--------------------
C Cmaj7
You see there's a time for letting go
G6 G Csus4/F#
I never thought that time would come
I dreamed of a tomorrow, yet I'm alone
Because I walked away from love

2nd verse------------------
Standing here, before the black abyss
Of all the things unknown
i really never, thought it would end like this
because you were always so close

Yeah, it's a song i wrote with biting sarcasm... it took about 3 minutes to write... 5 including music

Hello,

I write Christian songs. Some are purely originals. More Christian Blues entertainment than anything else. I want to write Praise & Worship. The Lord will send one my way soon. I have just recently gotten into P & W music. Mostly, I play Christian blues. Many times I take a secular Blues song and re-write the Lyrics to a Christian Message. These go over real well when I play live. Usually, The Lord just places a new song in my lap either while I'm just messing around on the guitar or sometimes while driving He Puts the whole song in my head. Other times I have several guitar parts I mess with then the Lord will show me " see how that rythem part will go with this chorus part ect ect. It all comes from Christ for me. usually I sit down at the computer and The Lord fills my mind with lyrics after I have the song recorded the musical parts. The Lyrics rarely come first.
