  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anybody listening to the new Lecrae album, "Anomaly"? It's really good. Can't wait for Trip Lee's new stuff as well.
I'm a huge fan of CHH. Everything from Lecrae to Gemstones. It's the only music I listen to recreationally. Here are my top 10

1. Lecrae - Most successful CHH artist ever
2. KB - My favorite rapper ever. I only put Lecrae over him because of Lecrae's success in the mainstream
3. John Givez - West Coast rapper. Really good. Kills every song he's on. Reminds me of Andre 3000 (secular rapper I used to listen to)
4. Bizzle - Can be great sometimes, but sometimes is not
5. Derek Minor - Has his own record label, RMG, and is great too
6. Gemstones - Used to be part of Lupe Fiasco's (secular rapper) record label, and was close with Lupe, but then became a follower of Christ and left the record label. Really good rapper and singer as well. Raps really fast at times.
7. Andy Mineo - 3rd best rapper in Reach Records (Lecrae's record label)
8. Beleaf - His album Red Pills + Black Sugar was really deep. Got me thinking. Also 1/3 of the rap group Dream Junkies (alongside John Givez and Ruslan)
9. Swoope - His album Wake Up is one of my favorites. His newest album Sinema didnt really catch my attention though.
10. Serge - Favorite new CHH artist. Is a great story-teller.

Honorable Mentions: Canon, Trip Lee, Shai Linne, KIDD, MC Jin, 6-Way Street (FKA Level 3-16), Da' T.R.U.T.H., The Ambassador, Propaganda, Braille, and Auditory Fabric.

Anyone out there listen as I do to any Christian Rap? What you do you think of it? Who do you listen to?

My favorites:

Trip Lee
Lecrae
tobyMac
Sho Baraka
Group 1 Crew

Hi there,
I like Lecrae, he's pretty good! Haven't heard much of the others though. I rap too, you can check some of my music out on the link in my signature

I like it most when artists mix rapping and singing and especially when there's a male rapper and female vocalist..

I don't even like rap, but this is a really excellent short album by 116 Clique. I listen to it alot. The lyrics are powerful. What makes this different is that they add heavy guitars a la Nu Metal into it.

Cant post a link....tooo newwwb

Enjoy!

I've found that Christian rap is very edifying, especially if you take the time to listen to and understand the lyrics (for some artists, it takes me a few listens to really get all the words). It's at the intersection of Christian life and an art form that is all about being raw and real. True poetry.

I started listening to rap in 1983. During the 80's it was a very important part of my music diet, with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Run D.M.C, Boogie Down Productions and others.

But gradually rap began to go in new directions, often not to my liking. Over time rap became a much smaller part of my music world.

Over the years most Christian rap hasn't impressed me. In the 80's and early 90's it was hard to find Christian rap that had the same quality as secular artists. Rap Sure's got points for originality and Stephen Wiley came across as sincere, but neither measured up to stuff like Afrika Bambaataa, KRS1 or Public Enemy. S.F.C was possibly the best Christian rap could do in that era. They had some decent tracks.

Increasingly the quality of Christian and secular rap began to match each other, but this mostly has meant styles of rap that I don't care for.

In the 2000's Deepspace 5 put out some really good tracks to my liking.

Recently, near the end of 2014 I got turned on to Beautiful Eulogy. Love this band. One of the best Christian rap groups I have heard. A fresh exciting sound and mix, that stirs me both musically and spiritually. They have put out two albums so far, Satellite Kite in 2012 and Instruments of Mercy in 2013. Excellent quality material. Odd Thomas (one of the three members, along with Braille and Courtland Urbano) has also put out some excellent solo material.

Until recently no Christian hip-hop musician has ever reached the level of a favourite artist, but that has changed.

Here are a couple fresh tracks from Beautiful Eulogy:

Another discovery is Propaganda. I'm not familiar with all his material yet, but this is a really good track. Psalm 69 with a twist:

"Christian Rap"

It started with us. Here is a very early rap tune (the earliest recording I know of) by inventive rocker Larry Norman who "invented" CCM. (called Jesus Music back then) and also developed Rock Opera, giving the Who the inspiration for "Tommy."
