Hello. I was wondering if there is an official position on Christian Music by the Catholic Church? Are there any rock bands that sing about Christian themes that are overtly Catholic?
Are Catholic musicians encouraged to write or compose worship type music? Or would they be steered more to secular music?
As a musician myself, I was just curious about that. (I won't debate, I promise :sorry: )

Not all music, even with a Christian theme, is appropriate for liturgical use. But Catholic musicians are certainly encouraged to create music in praise and glory of God.

Some contemporary Catholic artists are Matt Maher, Bob Lesnefsky (aka "Righteous B"), and Bob Rice.

I'm not sure if bands like Delirious, Matt Redman or Switchfoot have crossed the Catholic radar. Would those be deemed ok? I like their style and they seem to have a good message.

Thanks for replying.
Yeah sure, they'd be fine for casual listening.

Thanks for the replies so far.
At the churches I attend, we have worship leaders who lead the worship band through contemporary and traditional songs.
As a Christian musician, I have been wondering whether to use the gift of music for worship or just write about whatever like I had before I renewed my faith.
As long as the music is positive with a good message, I assume the Church is fine with Catholic musicians creating secular music like you would enjoy a secular movie or something? How would a Catholic musician use his instrument for God? (Like drums, electric guitar or anything else modern?)

Thanks!

I really wish our music was different at our church. It's really not uplifting for me at all. :( I'm not wanting to rock out or anything but I wish we could sing songs like Healing Rain or Awesome God. I can't see this changing-I mentioned our music one time to our elderly Priest and he hugged me and said..this isn't American Idol. LOL

What are some of his best songs? I just looked at a site where I often buy single songs and he has a ton of songs on there. Unfortunately Righteous B or Matt Maher was not on there. :(
