After a recent discussion with someone about music, I've come to wonder if there was any Christian metal that was worth listening to. I generally don't like CCM of any sort because I find it to be generally selfish and shallow, and so I listen to mostly secular music (which is equally selfish and shallow, but it doesn't claim to be all about God at the same time).

So I tried finding some good metal with Christian lyrics yesterday. I'm a fan of the symphonic and power metal styles, but I also enjoy a good death growl now and then as well. Generally, I like uplifting-sounding music. Something I've noticed as I've listened is that the lyrics are often exactly the same as the softer Christian music, just with faster guitars.

The best example I've found so far has been Theocracy for great musicianship and lyrics and style, but even so, I thumbed down one of their songs for certain lyrics about the Church (as if it could be divorced from Christ, Whose body it is).

What does everyone think? Suggestions are welcome!

When you say CCM is generally selfish and shallow it makes me feel quite angry and yet funnily enough I agree with you somewhat, . I believe we need to honor the past but also move with God's Spirit too into the future. That doesnt mean we become 'futuristic and have a focus on modernity/modernism (mostly technology focused) or strangely enough some Christians link the futuristic to outer space and robots also . Yup that's pretty messed up. Ive seen some CCM talk about being futuristic and they would have robots or the theme of outer space in their new album. The Kingdom of God is NOT a culture nor is it the culture of this world. We do not look to this world , Satan for what God wants to do that is NOT the anointing. We look to and get the work of God from the throne of heaven. So we need to stay in step with God's Spirit , we will die eternally without that and become numb. Its a combination as there will be hymns in heaven but too there will be for example Christian rock metal. You never want to miss out on what God's doing on the earth. Yup awareness is good I'm glad you have become aware of the weaknesses of CCM , I have become way more away in regards to my views of how soon the rapture is and a different view on popular Christianity which I do not like to name a few in regards to awareness. I've come to realise I haven't been able to accept everything that was taught in church . So my question to you is what alternatives are there to CCM? with all respect to the elderly especially such as my Grandma who i love very much we cannot keep listening only to the hymns over and over we need other genre's as heaven has all genre's of music. I repent though and am so angered by my own denomination where some in this part of the body of Christ have some new believers in that part even saying " I don't believe in hymns because it is religious tradition" I was so angered and hurt!. So I say this so we can all stop judging and bring unity. I cannot stress unity enough, its very important. Hope you can make sense of my ramblings. listen to God's music do not listen to junk that will pollute your Spirit and hurt and harm you. God's blessings be upon you as he leads you.

A point to note:
* Its dangerous to follow the direction of modernism as one aspect of that technology is following in the way of the Anti Christ the Mark of the Beast, how could Satan not use modern technology to implement the Mark ? There is such a emphasis and growth in technology, he is using this method. Please don't misunderstand me technology is NOT bad, but modernism? yes.

There are really good Christian metal bands.
Check out Theocracy, Demon Hunter, Living Sacrifice, As I Lay Dying (Christian themed Metalcore), Deuteronomium (seriously underrated, Check out the album "From the midst of war").
The following are somewhat okay bands but I do love them..Immortal souls, Narnia, Divinefire, Harmony.

Brian "Head" Welch has made one album under his own name and now works with band called Love and Death. Love and Death has produced one EP and is publishing new album at the beginning of next year. Totally worth checking out!
Would post links but can't because of that post limit, but both can be found from Spotify and YouTube. Also a song from upcoming Love and Death album is on YouTube, called The Abandoning.

Kinda hard music, but I love my music hard ;) New kinda worship music.

This might be a little off topic, but a few fairly mainstream metal bands have been doing stuff that seems pretty christian for a fair while.

(I tried to post some links but failed)

for example the devin townsend project (check out grace)
Megadeth (washington is next, or never walk alone)
Kreator (phantom antichrist, or voices of the dead)

I think the most effective way of getting a christian band who sound like slayer, might just be praying for slayer to meet Jesus.

I'd certainly like to hear more good christian metal though, even if the above three put christian messages in their songs, I am not happy to worship to them, and sometimes I feel like metal would be a great way to glorify gods power and majesty.

New here, but there is great Christian metal. Look at Faith Factor and Theocracy for your power metal fix and Mortification, Crimson Thorn, and Paramaecium for your death metal. I'm more into underground stuff like death metal and unblack metal, so I'm sorry I can't help you with more uplifiting stuff.
