I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this question, but I have something that's been troubling me.

I'm in a pretty heavy Thrash Metal band that I write all the lyrics, etc for. I am a Christian and I've recently had a revelation and I wanted to get closer to God and live as a better Christian because I've been backsliding and I know I have.

First off, my band DOES NOT sing about Satan, or bashes God, condones drinking, drugs, sex, etc. The only thing questionable in our music would probably be the whole "kill the posers" thing. Which I've done tongue-in-cheek (I'm not justifying myself, I'm just saying it is tongue-in-cheek. I'm not actually serious about it.) and sci-fi type things that deal with Post-Apocalypse (I'm a big Mad Max fan) I worry about giving people the wrong impression though.

Is there anyway, me being a Christian, I can keep my band but still change it so it's not really questioning in certain areas or should I just call it quits all together? Music is my livelyhood and I've worked very hard at this band I'm in. I could really use some guidance and opinions please.

Thank you

I want to know if it's possibly to keep my secular band going,

For me that's like asking if a Christrian can have any job other than that of a minister.

Thank God for your talent-ALL music can provide entertainment & enjoyment. Music is the language of emotion-just use it to uplifit, cause people to think and to brighten people's day. Not every verse has to have a thee, thou or say holy holy holy..Speak of the enjoyment of nature, the wonderment of children, Love, coming through pain, storytelling. Let us escape through your art for 3-4 minutes.

I can think of several GREAT secular songwriters who are great examples of Christians
Look at Kris Kristofferson, Tom Petty, Smokey Robinson, Billy Joe Shaver, Johnny Cash, just to name a few who've been great contribuors for a looooong time...

The band I'm currently in really has a dark message to it. We sing about the atrocities of warfare, the fear of nuclear war, etc.

I have taken out all swearing and questionable material in my music though and I feel better for it.

I do feel the world is corrupted though and I sing about that a lot better than I can about other things.

I think, personally, it is important to write/sing what you see. What you experience. If you see the negatives of society, and sing about those atrocities, then that is where your conscience lies. And I think there is certainly a place for that in music.

I do not feel comfortable always writing about God and His love - because, sometimes, that is not truly what is on my mind. To do so anyway would be like lying, for me. Sometimes what one needs is to write about other things, either for self-expression or release or for peace of mind.

I doubt God takes issue with that, so long as it is done to point out flaws and not to praise them. To release and not to dwell on the evil of the world.
