My absolute favorite genre of book to read is the historical fiction by a Christian author, set in the frontier days in America, in other words by historical I don't mean something set in Scotland or England or wherever. I love the old west, stories of people setting out there, ranching, that sort of thing. I feel like I've exhausted all the authors at my library of this type, can anyone suggest authors like this? Just throw 'em out there, I'd like to find someone new!!
Thanks,
Dori

Hi, sorry I just found your thread.
Here are some suggestions that I hope you might enjoy, and haven't already discovered. I am really a fan of Tracie Peterson.

I've always been interested in the history of the Harvey Girls. To think of young women leaving their families and moving far away to work in the Harvey Restaurants,is very interesting to me,so I really enjoyed her Westward Chronicles trilogy, and I also loved the Heirs Of Montana series, with a lot of American Indian involvement. These are all I've read personally,so far.

A Shelter of Hope (Westward Chronicles, Book 1) (Paperback)by Tracie Peterson 304 pages
Book Description
Jeffery O'Donnell is captivated by the mysterious Simone, who arrives at his office hoping to acquire a position as a Harvey Girl at the popular way-stops along the frontier rail line. Jeffery is torn, however, when he suspects that Simone may harbor a disturbing secret. Westward Chronicles Book 1

Hidden in a Whisper (Westward Chronicles, Book 2) by Tracie Peterson288 pages
Book Description
Rachel has secured herself a rare position at the newest Harvey House in New Mexico. She looks forward to a new life there, far from the memories and longings of her heart--only to find that the very man her heart refuses to forget will be working right alongside her! Westward Chronicles Book 2.

A Veiled Reflection (Westward Chronicles, Book 3) (Paperback) by Tracie Peterson 288 pages
Book Description
Jillian struggles to fill the shoes--and identity-- of her identical twin sister amid the strict rules and routines of the Arizona Harvey House. When the local doctor inadvertently discovers her ruse, he creates a plan of his own. Westward Chronicles Book 3.

Shadows of the Canyon (Desert Roses #1) (Hardcover)482 pages by Tracie Peterson (Author)
Though she holds a coveted position as a Harvey Girl at the elite El Tovar hotel, Alexandria Keegan's personal life is tainted by the increasing audacity of her father's indiscretions. Desperate to help her mother, Alex searches for a way to forge a future for the two of them -- but that means leaving the majestic beauty of the Grand Canyon and the steadfast friendship of Luke Toland.

Across The Years(Desert Roses #2)384 pages by Tracie Peterson
This is the second volume in the Desert Roses series. Ashley Reynolds was a "Harvey Girl," working in a Harvey's restaurant in Arizona. She lived with her grandfather and little daughter. She enjoyed her work and was regarded as one of Harvey's best. Her husband had been killed in WWI. She felt she could never find anyone who would measure up to the man she lost. Her daughter met an architect working on a Harvey project who was willing to share his interest in architecture with the little girl. Natalie encouraged this friendship. About the same time Ashley's grandfather was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.
Throughout the story another struggle was raging - Grandfather and Natalie felt a firm faith in God but Ashley had questions which kept her from faith and church. How could God take her husband as he did? How could God let her grandfather have cancer? The mystery of the bearded architect was solved in an interesting and surprising way. This is a really good story and it shows a small section of history in the west as the Great Depression was spreading over the country. It also shares the struggle several people in the story experienced in finding faith in God.

Beneath a Harvest Sky (Desert Roses #3) by Tracie Peterson
If you are interested in Native American folklore and history, this book has much to offer. The writing style reminds me a bit of Janette Oke; however, I'm more of a fan of Tracie Peterson's other novels which I find more exciting and intriguing.

Faith (Brides of the West #1) (Paperback)320 pages by Lori Copeland
Prolific author Copeland (With This Ring, LJ 2/1/98) kicks off another historical Western series with this pleasing tale of mail-order brides set in 1872. When their pastor father dies suddenly, leaving little money, three sisters realize that they need to take drastic action to survive. Each answers a newspaper ad soliciting Christian brides. Faith goes to Texas, where her intended, a well-to-do rancher named Nicholas Shepherd, seems to be having second thoughts. While her wedding is repeatedly postponed, Faith meets a local widower and decides to teach his blind son Braille. In time, Nicholas begins to realize that he may have lost Faith to another man. Although this is not the freshest premise, Copeland endows his characters with enough liveliness to make the book a fun light read. Recommended, especially for Copeland's growing group of fans.

Have you read any Janette Oke? They're wonderful - some of them are Canadian stories (When the Dawn Breaks, etc) but they are well done and some of my favorites.

Love Comes Softly - everyone's heard of those now that Hallmark did them, (I still have some of the original editions from when I was a kid and they came out - loved reading them then, love them now that I'm an adult too!) but her other books are fantastic too.

Wow! This is great! I haven't read any of those you mentioned except for the Lauraine Snelling. And speaking of Lauraine Snelling, have you read her Red River series? They are so popular, she's on the third series about the same people from the first one. I'm talking SERIES, not books!!

No,I haven't, but I did notice them when I was looking at the Dakotah series by her at Amazon, and thought they sounded really interesting, starting with the Norwegian Immigrants to the Dakota Territory.

I don't really like the plains areas,I lived in Minot,ND for 4 years when my dad was stationed there in the Air Force, and hated it. I'm originally from Idaho,so I love the Rocky Mountain NW and also the SW,from living in Tuscon,AZ.

I love mountains and trees(and the desert),so really enjoy reading stories set in those areas, but I think I will have to check these out, just because they sound so interesting.

I'm glad I keep lists of 'to read' books in email drafts in my email, because I sure couldn't remember all that I am interested in,LOL!

Oh wow, I have always wanted to live in the Rocky Mtn. states. I am divided between the NW, of course, being Idaho and Montana, and the SW, of which Tucson is my favorite, and possibly NM being an alternative, too. Do you live in any of those places now? I'd love to know more about it.

The Snelling Norwegian immigrant books are really great. I'm not crazy about the Plains either, but there's so much more flavor to those books than that, ya gotta read 'em when you get the chance!

Yes,the NW Rockies have breath-taking scenery, mild 'LOW-HUMIDTY' summers, and heavy winter snowfall. I was born in Idaho's panhandle, and my mom's family lived in Washington State,Idaho and Butte Montana(BTW Montana is a huge plains state, no mountains except western MT). My dad was stationed a few years in Spokane WA,which is a really nice western city.We moved around every few years, but went back to this area almost every year for vacation. I haven't seen Tuscon since '63-'64 when we lived there, and the last time I was in WA,and ID was '97 the year my husband died. Only have 2 sisters still living there. I've lived in OH since'68,when my hubby got out of the AF.
He was from KY,but no work there,so we ended up here, on the south shore of Lake Erie in north central Ohio. Fortunately not in the snow-belt!

Since I really enjoyed the Sarah Plain And Tall films,(though I haven't read the books)I sure do hope to read the Snelling books, and also the 4 book series of The Emigrants novels by Vilhelm Moberg.
