  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm wanting to get some books on deepening my faith. I'm looking for anything from Bible studies, devotional books, or others. Please list some of your favorites, including the author. Please also list why you like these books.

Also, is anyone familiar with Experiencing God by Blackaby? I recently saw mention of that book on someone's FB status and was curious if it was a good book.

I did the experiencing God study when I was in high school- the teen version. I enjoyed it.

I would say anything by C.S.Lewis- it just makes a person think. I have really enjoyed studies by Kay Arthur or Beth Moore- I've learned interesting things through them that I hadn't thought about in depth before or had never noticed before. I also have enjoyed Max Lucado- God Came Near/ When God Whispers your Name, Brennon Manning- The Ragamuffin Gospel, The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life by Hannah Whitall Smith

I'm currently working my way through a bible study called "Satisfy My Thirsty Soul" by Linda Dillow. I think it's pretty great so far... It's about intimacy with God and true worship and she doesn't just talk about stuff, she also gives real suggestions as well as relevant scriptures and anecdotes and I personally am really enjoying it so far.

I've been reading a series of book by Dan B. Allender, Ph.D. (sometimes co-written with his long time friend Tremper Longman III). In my opinion he's one of the more matured Christian writers in my personal library. Really enjoyed his book 'The Healing Path', which got me on the journey to deep self-reflection and a better understanding of the nature of God.

If you can find anything by Carl Olof Rosenius then I recommend it. His insights on scripture are great and inspiring.
I also vote for Screwtape letters. It was nicer to read then average books because it didn't seem so theoretical because of the way it's written.
The books by brother Yun are also fantastic. He's a Chinese christian, writing about how it was like to be a christian in the huge Chinese revivals. I think he's also got a book on the problems he's seen within the congregations he's worked with while being in Europe. Both The Heavenly man and Living water were interesting and important reads.

I can recommend pretty much anything from the following authors. Clarence Larkin, J. Vernon McGee, Lewis Sperry Chafer, and C.I. Scofield. All four have written works which have helped shape my theology and why I believe the way I do. I will even give an example from each one below.

Clarence Larkin - Dispensational Truth
J. Vernon McGee - Thru The Bible (I have the 5 volume hardcover set. It's a transcript of his 5 year radio series, which can be freely obtained in MP3 format on his site)
Lewis Sperry Chafer - Salvation (wonderful work on the doctrine)
C.I. Scofield - Rightly Dividing The Word, and the 1917 Scofield Reference Bible
