Re. this mornings headline:

BBC News - Defiant Charlie Hebdo depicts Prophet Muhammad on cover

Stupid in my view.
It's the equivalent of taking a good kicking in the playground and not learning any lesson from it..

It's also irresponsible if further potentially completely innocent people are harmed or endangered in anyway...

And why insult something or someone that will offend Muslims who have absolutely nothing to do with extremism or any kind of terror activity - i.e. the vast majority?

It is certainly provocative - on the other hand, wouldn't it empower the terrorists if they stopped making Islam a target of their satire which may encourage more attacks when someone offends Islam? The terrorists would definitely see it as a victory and vindication of their actions.

Christians, Jews and many others are also targets of Charlie Hebdo - not sure why Islam should be exempt from satire and granted special privileges just because some extremists are prepared to take such extreme action...

Is there an option for "enjoying the attention"

The magazine looks like juvenile attention seeking to me.
The vast majority of Christians, Jews and Muslims, and everyone else, have dealt with it in the past in the most appropriate way of addressing such behavior - ignoring it.

Now they've got the attention they wanted, and from everyone.

I'm not sure they would have wanted this attention at such a heavy cost. Ignoring this type of satire is the best option - problem is you only need a very small number of terrorists not to ignore it and the results are disastrous.

defiant or stupid?

Both.

And juvenile as well.

Defiant - because they don't let the Muslims stop them.

Stupid - because they poke the dragon of Islam without offering anything significantly better (all these cartoonists offer is a foul and juvenile vision of society).

Juvenile - their magazine is crass and foul, run by idiots who believe that what they offer is of any value whatsoever as a standard for a decent society.

What do I suggest instead?

Oppose Islam, but do so in a mature manner and by offering something of real decency and value rather than the crass, the crude, the childish and the vulgar.

Freedom of speech, if we don't have that then we have nothing. It goes hand in hand with freedom to offend.

So no it isn't stupid, they have right to put whatever like they want on their magazine.

And i think they are ignoring it, they have put these pictures like this before on it.. to stop now means what ?

I don't think it's attention seeking they are just doing their job has they have always done.

It can also go hand in hand with getting your teeth knocked out too.

*Sigh*

But it is we all have opinons and thoughts, regardless if it offensive, i know of one person funnily enough from down south who would love nothing better to do the above, but the law stops him but his freedom of speech doesn't stop him telling people his views etc.

Anyway i applaud Charlie for not backing down for doing the pictures the way they have always done it, because they were shot because of their views, the gunman were trying to stop freedom of speech you could say.

Only the most bogotted will be offended.

Whilst I have not seen the image as yet it has been reported that the prophet is depicted in sorrow at the mess humanity makes of itself. This is in keeping with the press release of the British Council of Muslims stating 'Dr Shuja Shafi, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said: “Nothing justifies the taking of life. Those who have killed in the name of our religion today claim to be avenging the insults made against Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace. But nothing is more immoral, offensive and insulting against our beloved Prophet than such a callous act of murder. Our thoughts, prayers and solidarity go to the families of the victims and the people of France. see here for full transcript: Paris Murders are a Greater Insult to Islam: Muslim Council of Britain Statement on Charlie Hebdo Massacre - Muslim Council of Britain (MCB)

The prophet Muhammad is viewed as a human who was a 'friend of God' just as Abraham, Moses and Jesus are.

Depicting God outside of calihgraphic portrayals of the verses speaking of God from the Qu'ran would be against all schools of Islamic teaching. Like Christianity Islam has various schools, denominations and understandings of the Qu'ran. Most like Christians would view art including cartoons to point back towards God the creator of all. Only a few groups akin to the Brethren and some puritanical strands of christians would take against any depiction of human forms. It seems strange that just because a few islamic thinkers think it wrong to depict humans we are happy to assume all do whilst Christians for whom think it wrong to depict human forms do not presume we all do.

Muslim artists who work as cartoonists have also drawn support for those killed. See this link- with english translations of the scripts. Arab newspapers around the world react to Charlie Hebdo attack - Imgur

As I said elsewhere, Freedom of Speech does not serve itself. It's purpose is to serve comprehension by enabling calm reasoned discussion. It is not a flag to engage in emotive, comprehension-destroying, profanity under.

Stupid. The best way to deal with this sort of thing is to ignore it. The more fuss the media makes, the more Charlie Hebdo mocks Islam, the more attention the attackers get. Extremists attack to get attention. If they don't get the attention they want, they have failed. Treat it as a criminal act, not as terrorism.

They're being foolish.

At least bury the dead before you go back to intentionally try and offend people at the most fundamental level to illicit a reaction.

If it was just them that paid the price then I wouldn't care, but it likely won't be.

"Stupid is as stupid does", Forrest Gump. It is crass, arrogant and lacks basic human intelligence concerning the rights and feelings of others.

They managed to make their point without killing anyone who disagreed with them, so they are already offering far more than their attackers.

I'm quite sure those championing the right to free speech are more interested in their right to give offence rather than take it.

Well, if said champions were going around killing people who offended them, you might have had a point.

But they aren't, so you don't.
