Ok what do you think the story/conflict behind them is?

I think that Charles Widmore set up - was the man behind the dharma stations/people.

how I got there -

Ben said to Locke, Charles Widmore wants to exploit the island. We saw the dharma institute trying to harness some powers of the island.

In the last season Charles said to Ben it was my Island first (think he said that, when Charles was in bed and Ben burst in!)

Explains why Charles hates Ben as Ben killed all the dharma people - maybe Ben let Charles know so not to try and come back?

Charles had been searching for the island we know for 20 (?) years - maybe about the time he lost contact with the dharma people? I know we see 60's stuff and van but Ben grew up in dharma so explains some of the time difference?

Now tell me how and why I could be wrong in this :)

I think you're probably right, but I think it goes further than that. I think Widmore "owned", discovered, inhabited - whatever - the island from many, many years back. Even going to the Black Rock landing, maybe even further back than that. I tend to think the 4-toed statue is old old old, so going back a long way.

I think he's so furious with Ben and so desperate to get back because the island is the only way he can stay alive. Like how Richard doesn't age, and hasn't aged since Ben was a young boy. I think Widmore was the original leader of the Others, and Ben ousted him, in the same way that Locke ousted Ben.

I've had this theory rattling around in the back of my head ever since we saw Widmore at the auction buying the ship's manifest for the Black Rock (I think that's what he was buying). I think he knows so much about the island and has been searching for it for so long, and I do think he is the one behind Dharma because he wanted to try to harness the island's powers for the inevitable day that the tribe spoke and snuffed his torch. ^_^

Ah well, I wasn't the first who thought of it but at least it means the theory isn't ludicrous :o
Yes the black rock captains log does mean Charles has been to the island (or knows everything going on). Obviously with the island now time traveling it explains the black rock and even the 4 toed statue as the island went back in time and people from that age discovered the island.

Don't know if Charles discovered or knew about the black rock in the 60's or he time traveled back himself.

But if he was the leader of the dharma institute (and I am not sure yet if he was on the island at that time) then he couldn't be the leader of the others (aka hostiles) so I am not with you on that but we will see ;)

And he must be so mad with Ben as he killed all of his people (the only reason I see so far as to why they hate each other) and why Charles wanted Ben alive as he knew Ben had answers to the island.

Not that it makes much difference if Charles is or not, but explains a lot of the story if he is.

I was reminded in the preview/flashback episode, (shown right before Season 5's first episode) that Ben has promised to kill Charles' daughter, because Charles was responsible for killing Alex. Poor Penny and Desmond, I hope they can stay far away from Ben and the island, now that they're back together.

One other thing about Ben....how can we possibly trust a man who was capable of mass genocide?

Perhaps he's bringing "the 6" back to the island for a very bad reason. He's a great character, but I don't trust him, and he continues to give me reason not too.

As far as Widmore, I'm sure he's looking to harness the island's power and other than that, really not sure what he'll do with it. Not a good guy either.

argh snoochface - you were right (well mostly) he was part of the others! So didn't see that coming. I only hope he somehow is the leader of the dharma people so I can redeem myself ;)

LOL! :D

Can we now say that Charles Widmore and Ben definitely met on the island? (or did we already know that and I'm just a bit slow?)

We didn't know, but I think now it's a safe bet.
