I was just wondering what sort of characters you would like to see more of. It seems to me the large majority of characters are either in their teens or twenties. Okay, so I admit that I'm too lazy to read through all the stories to see which characters are most common, but I figure often times people roleplay as someone similar to themselves in some sense. I personally like to roleplay as whatever random character I want, just as long as he/she has lots of personality.

What I want to ask is, when you're playing, do you ever wish there were more of a certain type of character? Does it always seem like the good guys outbalance the bad? Is everybody a strong hero? Do you wish there was a comical relief? Does the story need an older, wiser character? Anyway, I thought if people wanted to join but weren't sure exactly what they would do for a character, they could take some of your suggestions. I might do that myself. I like to create a challenge for myself.

If that didn't make much sense, this is where you post great ideas for characters you don't want to use for yourself, basically.

oh yes, that is an issue. When i was only a beginner in RPG, my characters tended to be the same age as the real me and they all had perfect personalities and abilities, but as experience accumulated, i ventured out to writing older or younger characters and making them a bit weak. In real life, nobody is perfect, and that goes for RPG too. Having perfect characters in RPG have a tendency to make the RPG too easy.. the heros win too comfortably, and then the plot just goes boom into a ridiculous end (or a fast one).

With character weakness, there's a lot more you can put in your post and a lot more for plot as well as character development; but i guess that's something that comes with time.. for the players to realise that themselves.

um... i kind of agree and disagree with what you said, Buskanaka. Older characters do play active parts in RPG and they can have as much freedom depending on their profession. Their experience in lives should add a richer layer to the story.

When I make charactors, I do tend to make them younger. When I actively think about it, I will vary the age. But the one thing I found that I always do, is make male characters. I've been trying to make female charactors, and have a few, but I'm a male and tend to make characters that way...

I have kind of a chart I use to make a random character class, age, race, and then try my best to develop their personality. Recently, I've tried giving them all mental disorders. But I think many of us have the problem of making our character to smart, no matter how we try, in a world where many were simpletons.

of course, I didn't mean that older characters are useless and senile... but they kind of are restricted in terms of what they can do physically, and because most people want to have lots action and fighting etc they tend to go for younger characters.

no.. really?! this sounds really useful, and challenging if you got a character you don't like..

um.. not really. How young do you define young? i consider early thirties 'old'. (not in real life, in rpgs)

Well, there are active and fit older people in real life, so they can certainly be in RPGs. And fighting doesn't have to be their strong point. Often they can be the ones to supply wisdom, generally the wisdom they have gained throughout their life. Older characters would have the advantage of experience, so as long as they're relatively fit and capable of doing at least a few things, I'm sure they can be excellent characters.

*gang up on Buskanaka* :D

j/k. Nice point you got there and very accurate in terms of characters in their 80s..

yes, that too. But if it was an 80 year old man, he probably won't be seen popping from one end to another end of the continent (unless he uses magical means), the health factor is ingrained in our minds. *cough*
