  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm trying to break my plot into reasonable sections for chapters, but I can't seem to figure out how long a chapter is, in general, on Word, double-spaced. In most novels, I've noticed that a chapter is between 5-10 pages long. How long would that be on Word? How long is a page in a book in relation to the number of pages on Word? I sort of wish I could write my story without messing around with chapters, but I think chapter breaks are important as a sort of catharsis.

Well, whatever the length, it will always change according to amount of content, type of print (large, small, etc.) and also how large the book is. Some chapters I've seen in novels can last from anywhere between a few pages to twenty or thirty. A chapter is as long as you want it, but it must have a reasonable break, of course. You can't just cut it into the middle of a discussion, unless of course you do the whole "OH NO, I'm so shocked to learn that fact, so i'll be numb in the beginning of the next chapter," thing.
I personally prefer five to ten pages on Word, however. :p

Hahahaha...just wanted to share my appreciation of that. It's a tactic I happen to like, but I can laugh at myself. Nice observation

300 words per page is a good, workable rule, I've noticed through typing up pages of published novels on Word and also from guidelines I've received from publishers.

I'm writing a novel that will have 16 chapters in total, plus a short epilogue. That's roughly 4500 words per chapter, or about 22 double-spaced pages on Word.

yeah....I like doing that occasionally, but if it's done at the end of EVERY chapter it gets kinda old really fast ^_^

The word count feature will come in handy here. As I understand it, a page in a published book is about 350 words, but can vary somewhat, or can be adjusted.

When I write my chapters usually aren't more than 5000 words, and I try to aviod anything less than 1000 words, but there aren't any hard and fast rules. Write until there's a chapter break, books where the chapter breaks are randomly distributed make me crazy.

I don't know how many chapters in my latest WIP, I keep adding more. Last count was 24.

do you guys like to stagger your chapter lengths? are all your chapters similar in length? do you like to keep them even, or do you have short ones and long ones, depending on what you're doing?

or heck, do you just not care?

just curious...
I end it where I think it should end :) If it's effective, I don't really care how long the chapters are. Some are begging to be long, others are more dramatic if kept short. For myself, it depends entirely.
