As I mentioned on another thread, I'm particularly fond of ancient hymns, particularly chant. It doesn't get anymore "classic" than that. There are hymns in use in the Orthodox Church that are over 1,000 years old. Anybody else love this beautiful, ancient art form? I'm particularly fond of Greek, Arabic & Russian Christian chant.

I like Slovonic chant in Byzantine tones with an eison.
I have a few CDs of this type at home, but I can't remember the name of them right off the top of my head. I will look them up and post them next time at a computer.

I have a few CDs of chant in English using Russian tones with a Byzantine style ison.

Thanks for the link. I've had some good luck recently finding some great Arabic CDs. There's a gentleman in Canada, Mr. Georges Karam that imports Orthodox CDs made in Lebanon, Syria and the Antiochian Patriarchate and makes them available via his site, Alexia Publications.

Here's the link to the CD page on his site:

http://www.alexiapublications.com/cds.htm

He is extremely personable and helpful and a great enthusiast of Arabic chant.

Best Russian pages I've found is

http://www.orthodoxmusic.ru/

There's an English version of the site (link on main page.) I've ordered from them before and they are also incredibly friendly and helpful. Let me know if you're interested in ordering some from the Russian site and I can provide some pointers on how to speed it up. Their English is a little rusty, but they're super cool. Just let me know if you're interested and I can give you the direct email of the English speaking representative there.

Thanks for the links.

Wanted to know if you ever purchased anything from Musica Russica.

They have tons of Russian, and a lot more. A person could go broke ordering from them, hah.

No, I've never ordered anything from the site, although people have recommended it to me. I'm really into what's available from the Russian site I posted above, so I'm getting most of my CDs from them right now. Even with shipping charges from Russia, a CD only costs about $12.00! Most of the recordings are by monastics or synodal choirs. Amazing stuff.

I've always been into Gregorian chant.....one work I would recommend looking into if you haven't heard it before is Allegri's "Miserere". It is a gorgeous piece about 7 minutes long, but it doesn't resolve until the last measure of it. It is so soothing!

If you go to this site and scroll down, and click on the "listen to" link, you can listen to a minute of it. Not the best, but it's great! Hope this is of some use God bless!

Anyone here into Gregorian chant? Like Hildegard von Bingen?
She's great!

You know if you sign up at Naxos.com you can listen to their CD of her music.
My fav on the CD is the O Euchai.

Latin is such a beautiful language.

Here's the link:
http://www.naxos.com/naxos/naxos_marco_polo.htm

After you sign up, just run a search, the CD's catalog number is 8.550998.

PS Please Check out my post "A Calvinist Composer?" There is some great info there.

And listen to my speaker icon. It's not chant but you'll probably all enjoy it.

Hi, all,

I'm completely new here. But I'm amazed at the depth of this discussion board. Very cool!

I adore chant... it's one of the things I look forward to most in Lent and Holy Week, as I have always been stunned at the simple beauty of the ancient music used in the liturgy around this season. And the Exsultet on Easter Vigil still sends shivers down my spine.

CeliaRose -- I often meditate to Anonymous 4's recording of Hildegard von Bingen's works. Amazing stuff -- my music history might be a little rusty, but she seems so far ahead of her contemporaries in her music writing.

White_Socks -- I've actually been to that store in Ottawa, isn't it across the street from a seminary? When we visited Ottawa we found out about it in a guidebook and I found it to be a fascinating place. As I don't yet own any Russian or Arabic chant CDs, I think I'll have to give them a call. ohh yeeeah.

I would highly recommend Russian and Arabic chant. Get some Greek too while you're at it. Amazing stuff.

If you click on the speaker icon above, you will hear a Rejoice, O Virgin (Rachmaninov) transcribed for string quartet. Although Orthodox hymns are sung without any instruments in our liturgies, I couldnt resist putting it in this format.

It is computer generated but is not midi...might be interesting for you to listen to it.
Let me know what you think.

A sung version can be heard at http://www.mitropolia-spb.ru/rus/music/Sounds/orthm06.mp3

Peace,
Dismas

GREEK! Yes. Any particular ensembles to recommend?
The monks of Simonapetra Monastery
The monks of Vatopedi Monastery
The monks of St. Anthony's Monastery
Lycourgos Angelopolous
Theodoros Vassilikos

for Byzantine (Greek) style chant in English, check our Fr. Apostolos Hill

You can get some great chant recordings at this site:

www.liturgica.com

Once you've entered the music shop section, click on 'Byzantine' for Greek stuff. They also have excellent selections of Russian music too. I can provide you some great Arabic links if you'd like.
