  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The waiter, who was struck by seven rounds in the attack at Shanghai Taste, is suing the nonprofit for its role in releasing Gaston-Anderson despite his criminal past.

Wang — who also is suing Gaston-Anderson and Shanghai Plaza owner US Hui De Real Estate Investment Corp. — is seeking over $15,000 in damages from each defendant, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

“He’s got scars all over his body. He can’t move his shoulder over a certain height. I don’t know how (the bullets) missed a vital artery,” the victim’s lawyer, Kory Kaplan, told the newspaper.
So many people on the left act as if the criminal laws passed are there to oppress criminals. What about the victims?

Why is it that so many "Law and Order" conservatives are aghast when people use our system of laws as designed? Are you claiming that we should deny bail to anyone who has been arrested?

For many nonviolent defendants, being able to get get bail means that they don't lose their cars while they are held by towing companies so long that they can't afford to get them back. It means that they don't miss work while they are awaiting disposition of cases which might result in probation and fines and nothing more. It means that families are not disrupted.
I was shocked to read that up to 80% of people being held in jail are low income defendants who have not yet been convicted and so are actually presumed Innocent.
In some cases perhaps people could be released with ankle bracelets that would alert the Police if they left their homes for any other purposes than their jobs.
The shooting of Mr Wang was a real tragedy and I am glad that the organization is reconsidering its standards. I do believe that he should be compensated as a victim of crime for his medical expenses. But while I think that the bail project in California needs to reassess itself, I do think that it is better for people accused of minor offenses to be released on bail or on their own recognizance.

In this case though, it appears that the bail project was operating illegally in the state where they posted bail.

And certainly, in the case of a repeat offender who has been convicted multiple times in quick succession, including for carrying a gun while committing his crimes, he should never have been allowed bail.

The worst part of this is that The Bail Project hasn't even bothered to release a statement apologising or sympathising with the victim, much less offering to cover his medical and other expenses. All they appear to have done is covered their behind by quickly shutting down the Nevada office due to its illegality.

For once, I (partially) agree with the OP on this one.
