In October 2019, the FBI became aware that a repair shop had a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden and that the laptop might contain evidence of a crime. The FBI verified its authenticity in November of 2019 by matching the device number against Hunter Biden's Apple iCloud ID​

For example, in August 2020, we got the results back from an iCloud search warrant. Unlike the laptop, these came to the investigative team from a third-party record keeper and included a set of messages. The messages included material we clearly needed to follow up on. Nevertheless, prosecutors denied investigators' requests to develop a strategy to look into the messages and denied investigators' suggestion to obtain location information to see where the texts were sent from.

For example, we obtained a July 30th, 2017, WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to Henry Zhao, where Hunter Biden wrote:

"I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.

Hunter Biden's alleged WhatsApp message fuels GOP assertions of corruption, even after plea

Hunter Biden's plea deal with the prosecutor who has been probing him has rankled numerous GOP lawmakers, who this week leveled new accusations against the Bidens.

Chris Clark, the lead attorney for Hunter Biden, condemned the GOP's "biased and politically-motivated leaks" in a statement on Friday afternoon, and sought to distance Hunter Biden's alleged words from President Biden.

"Any verifiable words or actions of my client, in the midst of a horrible addiction, are solely his own and have no connection to anyone in his family," Clark said.

Clark also cast doubt on the authenticity of the message: "A close examination of the document released publicly yesterday by a very biased individual raises serious questions over whether it is what he claims it to be."

If the message is in fact real and its contents taken at face value, it would certainly raise political and ethical questions for the White House. Hunter Biden and his uncles, James and Frank, have a lengthy record of invoking the family name to secure business deals without Joe Biden's knowledge, which could have been the case in this circumstance. But if Joe Biden wasn't in office at the time, it would not necessarily amount to evidence of a crime.


However, the tone from the Hunter's attorney is one of deflection and blaming it on the addiction.

Now it is quite possible that Hunter was blowing hot air and wasn't actually sitting next to his father when he allegedly sent that message (people on crack have been known to do crazier things). But it does feel like a shifting of goalposts a little bit.

Where the original defense of Hunter was that he wasn't trying to influence-peddle, and "all of these bad things were just a russian disinformation campaign", now that it's getting harder and harder to claim the bad stuff about him isn't real, the focus of the conversation has shifted more toward "well, he was in the grips of addiction, and Joe has no control over what his son does".


"He never did XYZ, that was all just propaganda" has morphed into "well, XYZ isn't really all that bad, and <insert something about Ivanka here>"
