  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey beloved_ash :)

Your little kitten Paris (love that name by the way) is only climbing your Christmas tree because that is what comes natural to her. I promise that she isn't doing it to wrack your nerves. When they see a tree, they assume that it's there for them to climb, scratch, rub against, etc.

The only real way to deter her from continuing this behavior is, every time you see her going for the tree, shake something at her or spray her with a little water bottle squirt. Your major advantage is that she is a kitten right now so learning is going to be a lot easier. The biggest thing to remember is to be consistent with it, and she will learn.

Also, make sure that she has plenty of other things to do around the house. Maybe consider getting her a little carpeted house that she can climb on, climb in and all that fun stuff for a kitty. This will take her attention away from this fascinating tree that she sees with all these lights and shiny decorations :)

Keep in mind too that since she is just a little kitten, her energy level is obviously going to be a lot higher. So this means that she needs a whole lot of play-time with her new mommy. Try and wear her out when you have the chance as often as you can. This will help with her wanting to get in to everything that she sees. Hope this helps!

Good luck & enjoy your little bundle of joy :D

thank you so much for your advice! i do love my kitten, but she can be quite the handful sometimes, what with the climbing of the trees and my screen doors... i try to play with her, but she seems to get into something everytime i turn my back. i'm hoping she will grow out of it and b3e a good cat... lol thanks again for your help!

My cat did the exact same thing.. he even knocked it over a couple of times!
Cats are supposed to dislike orange peels, so you can try placing some throughout your tree.
Unfortunalty.. my cat just ate them.. :S
But maybe yours won't like them!
We just had to keep taking him out of the tree over and over..
We'll have to see if he does it again this year.

Also.. if you can't deter her from it.. it can make for some pretty cute pictures! lol
Good luck!

lol. good suggestion with the picture thing. as for the orange peels, i tried that one. i also tried spraying the tree with orange juice, and leaving oranges themselves at the base of the tree. i thought cats didn't like citrus stuff?? she doesn't eat the oranges, but she still climbs the tree

I assure you, your cat is very normal. Last Christmas our kitten was about 4 months old, and I put up an artificial tree, the kind that you stick each individual branch into a hole on the "trunk." I put up the lights. Then, I went out to the shed to get the rest of the decorations, and when I got back, the cat had climbed the tree and completely disassembled it! The branches and the lights were just a big tangled mess, and there was the cat, just hanging on the one or two remaining branches, still busily finishing the job.

:D

It looked so funny that I just had to laugh. I knew there was no hope of us having a tree that year. I'll try it again this Christmas and see how it goes.

lol! My mom used to have a Persian that would go up to about the second set of branches and would just sleep in the Christmas tree. It was so cute! :D Another thing I have noticed is that cats and especially kittens love to play with the ornaments on the Christmas tree! :D
