I'm currently in a debate, (a real easy one, I might add) and in it the question came up, about the nature of God. I've realized that I have a particular view of God, (which is in total conformity with the dogma and doctrine of the Catholic Church) and that sharing this view of God will not only help explain a lot about my philosophy and practices, but also help people understand my personality better. I also think having other people share there views about God will help me understand them better, and help others understand each other better.
So my view of God: God's name is YHWH, which is usually translated as HE WHO IS, which is a very good translation, however a more accurate translation of YHWH would be HE WHO IS BEING. God is Being Himself, He is that upon which all of creation depends on in order to exist, naturally, my favourite argument for the existence of God is the argument from contingency which is points directly to this. God is Truth, Truth is that which is and, as I have already mentioned, God is HE WHO IS, quite frankly, a person who seeks to know and love God, should never be a relativist, or any other anti-truth philosopher. Now God is Love, I do not in anyway deny that, I greatly delight in contemplating God as Love, as the Most Holy Trinity. However I must emphasize that God is Truth first, Love Second, the reason I emphasize that is because love is an action, not a being, if God is love first, or just love, than we have a functionalistic view of God, we emphasize God's function over His Being, but what is more important? What one does? Or who one is? Again I'm not denying or even downplaying God as Love, I'm just pointing out that being is more important than doing, and rightly so for God is Being Himself. Whenever I receive Holy Communion, I chant the following informal prayer:
So that's the basics of my view about God, there is more, but I'm pretty sure this suffices for now. What do you think, fellow Catholics? And what is your personal view of God?
