16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd..

The Haydock Bible commentary has this:

Ver. 16. One fold. In the Greek one flock. The signification is the same; that is, there shall be one church of Jews and Gentiles converted.

The NAB footnote has this:

7 [16] Other sheep: the Gentiles, possibly a reference to "God's dispersed children" of John 11:52 destined to be gathered into one, or "apostolic Christians" at odds with the community of the beloved disciple.

It bears pointing out that the Catholic Church does not have an official understanding of every verse. Tradition is more of a framework.

Thank you sir..Thats an interesting comment...So you read scripture and read commentary just like us fundy gelicals...Do you/can you then allow the Holy Spirit to help you understand the verses rather than getting some pat answers with, say your catachism...Thanks ..God Bless

Yes, we pray that the Holy Spirit leads us to the truth found in scripture, when I answered your question, I just looked over chapters 9 and 10 of John and told you what I thought it ment.
It is the idea of "orthodoxy" or ideas that are traditionaly christian ideas, this goes along with what QuantaCura said about it being more of a framework, there can be many Orthodox understandings for the same verse, none of them are wrong, they just show a diferant emphasis from the POV of the reader

Thank you Rham....Interesting thing I am seeing/learning in here and GT...I heard that Catholics don't read their bibles, but what I am finding out is those who are serious about their walk with Christ get into the scriptures and study to show themselves approved...Whether they are RC, Ortho or Prot....Funny thing about tares is that they are around us all.....H

I think even Protestants and Evangelicals have a kind of traditional framework they read Scripture within. For example, we would all agree that if you thought a verse meant that Jesus was a creature and not Divine, then you would have strayed outside the bounds of proper interpretation.

But generally, there can be more than one meaning and even personal ones. I think it was St. Jerome, the great Biblical scholar of the 4th century, who said Scripture can be like a puddle where I child can play and at the same time an unfathomable ocean that no person could completely plumb.

Remember though many verses of Scripture were intepreted by the Holy Catholic Church, already in the early church; for they merely passes on the original intepretation that the Apostles handed on to their sucessors the bishops; we cannot intepret Sacred Scripture contrary to the mind of the Church, and to the traditional intepretation of Scripture that the Holy Ghost has revealed via Apostolic Tradition that is the true intepretation of Holy Writ. Bear, in mind that although, we cannot intepret Holy Writ contrary to Catholic doctrine: for it comes from Holy Writ and Catholic Doctrine is the correct and God-given Truths of Christ as in Holy Writ, not all of Holy Writ has been intepreted by the Holy Mother Church. Much is still left up to one, the Catholic, to intepret (albeit with the mind of the Church) quite freely.

If anyone should have anything to add to what I've said, do, feel free to post!

Yes we can but that doesn't guarantee we get the right answer.

I like the quote.

Another framework of non-catholics is that most have a pastor.
