  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, or the Teen forum, or the Music forum. So, I thought I'd ask you guys first.:)

Okay, my niece is almost 12 years old, and she is really into listening to her CD's with the head phones on. She has CD's by these artists:

Aaron Carter
Sheryl Crow
Cher
Dreamstreet(I think that's what it was)
Enya(sp?)
And others.

I listened to a little of Aaron Carter, and it sounds like rap with not too good lyrics.

So I'm thinking I want to buy her some CD's, something Christian but Catholic, but the music has to be "cool".

The problem is, I don't know beans about the music that kids like nowadays. I did a Google search and found Rachael Lampa. She is supposed to be good, but don't they all say that if they're trying to sell you a CD! And, there are so many artists out there, how can I decide on something I've never heard?

Anyway, can somebody give me the names of a few good artists, preferably Catholic artists, singing "cool" Christian music?

Thanks!

To Auntie:

Sometimes you have to 'throw in the towel' when it comes to the stuff that kids listen to. Even if you censor the music in the home, the kid has access to the garbage elsewhere. I'm not copping out completely, though. Many albums have the lyrics available, and if I found something offensive, OUT the CD would go!

We were able to control a lot of what our kids listen to by playing DADDY'S oldies. My kids grew up with Jim Reeves. (a little bit of Englebert was thrown into the mix, too, LOL) My husband also has quite a collection of oldies rock from the fifties and sixties. WHOLESOME MUSIC, LOL!

Elvis is REALLY big now, because of the 25th anniversary of his death. Maybe an Elvis commemorative CD?

Peace,

You guys are no help at all! :D:D

VOW, if I buy her a Jim Reeves CD, do you think she will like it? j/k

Actually, I like Jim Reeves, but somehow, I don't think she will!

I was thinking of something non-secular, something to put her mind on Christ. She listens to the CD's for hours, and with the head phones on, so I find myself wondering what is being "drummed" into her young and innocent brain--she is only 12 yrs old. Also, her 9 yr old sister likes to immitate her and will follow in her sister footsteps.

I recomend that you go to your local Christian Bookstore and ask a clerk - particularly a young clerk -

There are several good stores in my town - and the clerks tend to be young adults and they are very willing to talk about Christian music.

Groups like Third Day, Jars of Clay, Petra, Amy Grant, 4Him, etc.

John Michael Tablot happens to be my favorite artist but he does not typically apeal to youth.

Auntie - I think people 'throw in the towel' too much these days. I find it very sad that parents and family do not take responsibility for their young ones. It is a parents responsibility to form that child and tell them what is right and wrong, and to punish willfull disobedence.

Oh, sheesh, Poly:

You had to be REASONABLE, LOL!

Auntie, his advice is very good. I do know that the Berean Christian book stores have an EXTENSIVE music section. Find a kid there who looks to be the same age as your niece, and ask away!

And Poly: ten laps around the forum for being such a wise guy.....

<snicker>

Catholic Christian and cool... hrm, for children that is a tall order.

The one guy I can think of, off the top of my head, would be "Fr. Stan Fortuna" the Rappin' Monk from the Bronx. Two other Catholic bands would be "Burlap to Cashmere" and "Crispin".

There are a number of good, cool Christian bands though that I like, dunno if any of them are Catholic but this Catholic would endorse them:

Switchfoot, Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, P.O.D., Jars of Clay, The Waiting, Smalltown Poets, D.C. Talk, All-Star United, and Sonicflood are all good. P.O.D. has probably received the most publicity and I'm sure your niece has probably already heard of them.

The group my 15 year old teen likes the most at the moment is MXPX ... he also likes Third Day (just got a new cassette by them), Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, dcTalk, Skillet, Petra, Switchfoot ... and he just circled some in the music guide that I've never heard of ... Beanbag, Bleach and East West.

My girls like the above favorites along with some female vocals by Out of Eden, Rebecca St. James, Christine Glass, Plumb and Avalon ...

If you ask the attendant who sounds the most like the groups she's listening to you'll get some good guidelines ... I can't remember which one, Jaci Velasquez or Rebecca St. James, but one of them sounds a lot like Cher.

You might want to get her a variety CD and ask her to let you know which group she likes the best ... the WOW CD's have a large variety of music ... usually one side is more "hip" than the other.
