Is using tobacco a mortal sin?
. . .
Tobacco is used for nicotine which is a drug that has been proven to have harmful effects. The Catechism has this to say on DRUGs:
2291
The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.

Nicotine is not a drug. There are no real thereputic uses for it outside of assisting with helping to withdraw from dependency.
Why would you think tobacco is a mortal sin?
The eye-patch wearing pirate nun on EWTN (sister Mary what's-her-face)once said that smoking was absolutely not a mortal sin on her show. She even laughed at the person who suggested that it was. I trust her over you, Jack. She's awesome. Pirate Nuns rule.
Catechism of the Catholic Church said:2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others' safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.
I dunno, Met....is heroin a drug?
