  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have an assignment for my RCIA class. It's not due until February, but I wanted to start on it now since the holidays can be hectic. We've been asked to write a short 1-2 page paper on a topic for our RCIA class (if we feel comfortable). The topic I drew out of the hat was "Catholic Morality", but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable now. It sounds like a really big subject. Where do I start? Is there a specific part of the Catechism that deals with morality? (It seems like most of it would.) Can you recommend any books on Catholic morality?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

They won't be grading you to harshly... *wink* What I would do is write a short paper just on what your views are on morality and base it on the teachings of the Catholic Church... this will show that your beliefs fall in line with the Church and also show that you have a good grasp of it.

What teachings? Is there a specific section of the Catechism that I haven't found??? Are there any books that you know of that can help me?

I think there's a section of the Catechism called "Life in Christ" (I want to say that it's section 3 of the four sections in the Catechism, but I could be mistaken.) Anyhow, it goes through the basics of Catholic morality and then goes through the 10 Commandments, showing how morality is based in each one of the commandments.

Teachings include premarital sex, euthenasia, abortion, death penalty, etc. This site might help for that.

Thanks for the suggestions. It might take me a while to get through them, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Well good luck! And WELCOME HOME!!! :)

If I were to add my 2 cents worth - I would recommend perhaps looking into "The Culture of Death" which is what Pope JPII called the world's way, vrs "The Culture of Life". Immorality causes death - if not physically through abortion and other murderous acts, then definately spiritually.

Anyhoo, mainly I just wanted to say how pleased we all are to have another soul come home to Rome :)

Catholic morality is closer than you might think. Western societies have been schooled for two thousand years in Catholic morality. Even today most of us, from the most simple to the most sophisticated, understand what Catholic morality is intuitively.

Certainly modern societies have strayed far away from Catholic morality in recent years, but the gut instinct of most young girls in our society, for example, would still be that they would want to express themselves sexually in a forever sort of relationship.

That would be Catholic morality. And the million and one ways that such a gut instinct can now rationalized away isthe antithesis of Catholic morality.

Treating the least powerful among us as we would treat the Second Person of the Holy Trinity is Catholic morality. Turning our noses up at such people in order to be able to rub shoulders with the rich and powerful is not.

Spending our live's in the service of others making the world a better place is Catholic morality. Spending our life force serving our own pleasures and desires is not.

Even as much of modern society turns away from Catholic morality, it is done fully conscious of what Catholic morality is.
And it is this full consciousness of just what Catholic morality is that leads so many (of us) turning away from Catholic morality to despise the Catholic morality so much in the first place.
