  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have the NIV Application Study Bible. I love this bible. It explains difficult scripture & I need all the help I can get!

What is the difference between the Catholic Bible and other bibles? Do you know where I can get a great Catholic Bible (possibly for free or low cost) Thanks
You have to realize that a non-Catholic bible is going to explain difficult passages in ways that may be contrary to Catholic teaching and doctrine . .

I have a bible I still love to use . . but I am aware that it does contain information that is not in line with Catholic teaching, but its got a great wealth of information that doesn't contradict Catholic teaching.

What is it you want the bible for specifically? Do you want to learn apologetics? Do you want one for devotional use?

A Catholic bible is going to have ALL the books originally canonized . . .in their proper places. . . it is going to have notes consistant with Catholic teaching (If it is a good one) and then there are those which include Early Church Fathers and Church documents in the notes . .

What are you hoping to get out of your bible right now?

Peace in Him!

I found a Ignatius Bible (Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition) for 19.95.

A while back I found a site that had free Catholic Bibles, but I can't find it now, I'll try to keep looking.

A Catholic Bible is just the same as a Protestant Bible with the exception that it has the seven Deuterocanonical books--Wisdom, Sirach, Judith, Baruch, Tobit, and 1 and 2 Maccabees, as well as portions of Daniel and Esther--as well as the 66 protocanonical books. In other words, it has the books of the Septuagint that were the "norm" for sixteen centuries.

Sometimes an old Douay-Rheimes Bible, which was the standard Catholic version for 200 years, can be gotten at a Thrift Store or so, as probably the 1966 Jerusalem Bible. The standard now in the United States is the New American Bible. The readings of the liturgy are from it. Although not all RCIAs give Bibles out, my husband was GIVEN a paperback NAB when he went to RCIA in the military. Of course probably the best Catholic Bible we have is the Ignatius Bible which is a reprint of the 1966 Revised Standard Version.

I have the NIV study bible as one of my bibles. It is very good on some aspects, and doesn't give many concessions to Liberalism, but in other places the notes twist scripture so that it conforms with Protestant Evangelical doctrines. It is therefore a bad resource for Catholics to use to understand Catholic teaching and its relation to scripture.

What is the difference between the Catholic Bible and other bibles? Do you know where I can get a great Catholic Bible (possibly for free or low cost) Thanks
Most protestant bibles have 7 Old Testament books removed.

Some catholic Study Bibles, including the Jerusalem Bible and the NAB, tend to have Liberal Study notes, which treat modern critical theories about the Bible as if they were facts, and sometimes do not give as much emphasis to Catholic Teaching as I would like.

There is a reasonably priced pastoral Bible with Catholic study notes here:

New American Bible Saint Joseph Edition

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0899429505/102-4459377-7430518?v=glance

You can get one used for $2. It has EXCELLENT notes that are right in line with the teachings of the Church. Seriously....the notes take up like half of each page and are solid gold. You've gotta get one.

Has the St Joseph Edition different notes to the standard NAB?

I saw the notes to the NAB available over here, (it isn't the Official bible in the UK) and as I said in my last post, was underwhelmed.
