  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My Mom recently mailed me my old Bible from home so I could look some stuff up. I noticed it says "For Catholics" on the front cover. When I bought it I just picked it randomnly so now I"m wondering, why is it for Catholics? What is different about a CAtholic Bible? Is it still valid for someone like me who doesn't have a denomination and is just a new Christian trying to study the Bible?

Welcome BlessedVegan
Good question!
Well, it might have commentaries or notes by Catholic theologians. Also it probably contains all 73 books, which all Bibles had until Luther threw 7 books out of the OT in the 1500s.
Which Bible is it? For general reading I think most Bibles out there are very good.

Welcome to OBOB!

I started out with the Good News New Testament as a young christian 30 some years ago . . it is very easy reading, but it is a thought for though translation, not a word for word one . .

I would recommend that in addition to that one, that you get another Catholic bible (so you have all the books originally canonized by the Church and in their proper place in the Old Testament) . . .either the St Joseph bible which is the New American Translations (which is a combination of word for word and thought for thought approach), or the St Ignatius bible, which is more of a word for word translation, the Revised Standard Version (RSV Catholic edition). The RSV is considered the better of the two . ..

When you get a chance, read the book of Wisdom . . I think you will absolutely love it. It contains one of the greatest messianic prophecies ever . . of the passion of Christ.

I dislike the term "Catholic Bible."

Would not, "Bible" be more proper for it, and the other one could be called "Bible minus 7 books?"

Isn't "Catholic" implied by the word Bible?

The opposite of Catholic is Heretic; so all non-catholic bibles are the Heretic’s bible.

I am glad you ask the question. I think more and more folks are starting the question the 66 books they have always been told is the complete word of God.

I think the New Jerusalem Bible is the best "Catholic" translation... Though, despite the lacking books, many of the "Protestant" translations are superior in scholarship and word for word accuracy (e.g. the NASB, which comes from the same vein as the RSV, but is much more up to date).

WEll gtsecc..I must say I'm not really questioning the other type of Bible..I just randomly got this one and now don't know what it is. Thanks for the info! I think I'll stick with this one for now since it's raelly easy to understand, then get a new one later on. Then I can decide if I want to buy a Catholic or non CAtholic one. Thanks!

The best Catholic translation in the Vulgate, which the Council of Trent declared to be without error and has been used at Mass ever since.

That's why I prefer the Douay-Rheims, since it's the English translation of the Vulgate, and almost word-for-word. Even if there's a better way to translate some of it, at least I know there isn't anything wrong. Plus, I don't have to worry about modernism creeping in.

The NAB isn't bad, although the footnotes can be (Why don't the footnotes to Matthew 16:18 mention the pope?), but if you know your faith, the NAB's fine.

The are actually called "Catholic Editions" . . .this is different than an edition that may include the deuterocanonical books as apocrypha in a seperate seciton . .

A Catholic Edition (it is easier to say simply Catholic) bible intersperses those books into their proper places within the canon . .

It is not an attempt to segregate, but to distinguish between different types of bibles in this regard . .

:)

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I've been getting advice from all the denomination specific boards, trying to learn as much as I can about the different denominations. Right now I'm a blank slate..I don't know very much about the diff denominations. But my Mom is Catholic so I could just ask her, I guess.

Is the Good News Bible the one with the line-art pictures in it? I have one of those and love reading it. I'm not where I can see it now or I would know for sure. It's in the kids room. We read it quite a bit before bedtime. Read this one through. Then get another version and read it through. :)

Well don't wake the kiddies! I'm sure they need their beauty sleep;)
It's got a maroon and light yellow cover.

I googled it and came up with that link, so the wee-ones are still asleep :)

I love that bible. I know of one priest that came to Christ because of it.
