Hi! I have a 13yr old neutered male cat and a 6 1/2 month old not-yet-spade female cat. Recently I've been noticing a strong odor in the living room of the house as soon as I walk in the room. I have looked and looked and haven't seen anything that is a tell-tale sign of spraying and I've been on my hands and knees sniffing around the room to figure out where the scent is located but have had no luck. Is it possible one of them has sprayed? Could it spraying going on in another room with the odor 'drifting' into my living room? Do female cats spray? I know males do but I had been told that they wouldn't after being neutered.

Yes the odor can drift. Is it a musky scent? The older cat may not be happy with the new arrival and is acting out by peeing on the carpet. Or it could be the other way around. I had adopted two cats at the same time from different litters. I thought I wouldn't have the problem of one cat trying to be alpha, but I was wrong. So you just never know how a cat will react. I feel that they like to be alone and be the boss. They are loners out on the street and always fight for dominance. I see it every night in my works parking lot. All the stray kitties respect the mommy tabby cat and she always reinforces her position with chasing, swatting, and a hiss here or there if another cat gets close. But she is all love toward us. So cats are finicky and full of CAT-attude! Keep trying to find the spot. It won't be a big ol area. Their bladders are not that big. Febreeze is a wonderful descenter. In the meantime, try to keep an eye on the cats as best you can. This is hard since they are so stealthy and can fit anywhere. Try to close off rooms and keep the litter box extra clean. Give the older cat lots of attention and also give lots of attention in front of the new addition. This will help the older cat learn that good things happen in the presence of the new cat and that you still love him just as much. And please get the other one fixed as soon as you can. You are going to have a very verbal kitty when she comes into heat.
