  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a 1 yr old cat. She gets into things she is not suppose to so I have used the old squirt gun on her. She would be chewing on flowers for example and I would squirt her with water and all she does is look at me like I am stupid and licks herself and returns to chewing on the flowers or whatever.

So, should I start picking her up by the tail and twirl her around in the air or start pulling out one toe nail at a time until she learns no means no.

Help

Yes I say no before and after without results.

No, you shouldn't. When you use the gun she thinks you are playing, maybe you need to get her some trainning or get rid of her if you can't handle her. She's acting like kittens do. Too many people get pets before they ready to take care of them. Sorry, if I sound a bit rude, I'm one of those animal loving people.

Please, my title was only goofing around; I love cats and had 2 for 15 yrs until they died. The principle of using a water bottle .... is very well known as a way of getting cats to stop doing certain things. Yes, I know she is acting like a kitten and has broken several things which is o.k. by me however she still has to learn that certain things are off limits as my 3 previous cat learned. I cant actually read her mind but I really dont think she thinks I am playing with her. She literally likes water and getting wet. She goes into the tub, shower, kitchen sink while I am doing dishes. Therefore the principle of water does not work with her. And I am also a cat lover regardless of what the title of this post says and the extreme punishment I mentioned in the op. I really didnt think somebody would actually take me serious regarding the extreme punishment I mentioned.

So again does anybody have an Idea on how to train a cat that likes water and does not pay attention to verbal commands.

Dealing with problems:
When we talk about punishing, ultimately what we are trying to do is reduce or eliminate an undesirable behaviour. We accomplish this by getting the cat to associate a particular behaviour with something unpleasant. Make sure the cat also thinks it's unpleasant. The first thing that may think of is a squirt gun. If we catch the cat scratching the sofa, a blast of water will make it run away. If kept up regularly it won't take long until the cat stops scratching the sofa. Keep in mind that this technique is effective only when the cat doesn't see that you are the squirter. If kitty sees you, it will continue the behaviour when you aren't there.

From here

Thanks

As for the chewing on flowers, I think they have stuff called "Bitter Apple" that you can spray on the plants, has a bad taste that animals aren't supposed to like.

You might just have to put the flowers up out of reach...good luck!!

If it was just flowers, I would stop getting my wonderful wife flowers and substitute for something else. But it is literally everything in the house.

Can you put "Bitter Apple" on tangible items? couch, wooden chairs, tables or will it stain fabric?

 You know, I'm not sure...it's been a long time since I used it, so I don't remember...let me see if I can find something online...

Here we go....
Grannick's Bitter Apple has been proven effective at reducing or eliminating problems associated with your pet chewing unwanted surfaces such as valuable furniture or electrical cords. Also helps to discourage fur biting, hair chewing ans hot spots.

Hope that helps!!

I just wanted to say that is so sweet! You not only said your wife was wonderful but you give her flowers too! I don't think i would subsittute that!
Any way we did use the old water bottle but we only had to do it a couple times, Sassy (our cat) would shread up the tissue paper every chance she would get! Now we keep the bathroom door closed but it did work, God Luck and God Bless you for being so kind to your wife!
