• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Casual Drinking

I am hoping that someone can clear my confusion up on a problem that keeps coming up in my marriage. My husband is a casual drinker. When I say casual he drinks sporadically from week to week. As I write this he has about 14 empty beer cans in the back of his pick up truck. He never comes home drunk just a little tipsy sometimes. I say sometimes because he can go a month without touching the stuff then all of a sudden it is constant. He says that he is not going to tolerate me telling him when he can or cannot drink. It really hurts when he states this because he knows how opposed I am to drinking. I do not drink and feel that it will do nothing but destroy us. I just don't know, sometimes I think that since he is not drunk and does not abuse me or abuse the alcohol, maybe I am wrong? I just hate to think that causal alcohol intake is good. Any thoughts will be so appreciated on how others see causal drinking. Thanks.

There are some publications that discuss that social or casual drinking is 1-3 drinks per episode for men, and 1-2 for women. Binge drinking seems to be more of an issue for some people, and perhaps your husband? Alcoholics may drink socially at times, binge drink at times, or drink constantly. I would suggest looking to see if there is an alanon group in your area and just sit in on the meetings to get a better picture of alcoholism and what you might be able to do for you and for your husband.

I drink casually and socially and see nothing wrong with doing so. Some evenings I'll go out with friends and have some beers (if I'm driving I stick to one beer maximum, but usually either walk or take public transport). Most evenings I don't drink any alcohol.

There are many things that will destroy us if we take them too far. Some people destroy themselves with alcoholism while the majority can take it or leave it. Some people destroy themselves with gambling while most people can take the occasional flutter on the lottery or some such. Some people become workaholics, others become addicted to various forms of exercise and so on.

Do you have a practical reason to find alcohol so undesirable?

Is he casually drinking 3 or 4 beers or is he binge drinking so much he can't remember and blacking out? If he's just drinking a couple he's probably not so bad off. If he's occasionally binge drinking then it tends to get worse and nagging tends to make it worse. Check out Alanon if you are concerned. It will help you deal with it effectively.

'But Al, its his problem. I don't have a problem and I WON'T go to any meetings.'

Oh, nevermind then. Good luck.

(A year later)

I've seen people with blood sugar sensitivities get this way. Alcohol has a lot of sugar in it, and it causes a drop that people fix by having more sugar.

It's like a person who finishes a box of ice cream: their bodies/brains recognize the short spike, so take more sugar to fix the blood sugar drop. Up, down, up down more quickly than the average person, when insulin isn't regulating normally.

Then when they don't drink for weeks, it might be because they have stabilized and don't feel the drop. Eating more proteins and fewer carbs keeps them level.

Also I've met several people with bipolar who calm themselves with alcohol. They regret using it, but don't know what else can remove that anxious feeling.

In a case like that, lithium or other meds help people stabilize without using solutions that cause new problems. Getting a handle on the source can help with the side habits.

I drink causally, but I never get drunk - its only to relax after a long day at work, maybe twice a week, not excessive at all. The truth is alcohol is a drug, its is, it may be legal but its a drug. You have do ask do I bring glory to God when I drink, if not - well then you husbands knows the answer - 14 cans in the back of his car, well thats sounds pretty intense.

Why are you so opposed to drink , you know the bible only talks against drunkenness, alcohol is not the issue, abuse of it is, its like saying food is the cause of obesity - no over eating is, not food. Christians need to be carefully by not abusing alcohol, thb I think the issues will all these things can be traced to identity in Christ - please have a listen to this guy, he is an excellent preacher - start at the bottom (missed call) work you way up - you will blessed.

Hi, I enjoy a drink sometimes 2 beers a night, sometimes a binge on the weekend. It helps me to relax and digest my thoughts. Casual drinking is the way forward my child.

sometimes a binge on the weekend - you know the bible clearly says not to get drunk right ? or are you one of those christians that likes to cherry pick and create God in your own image.

There is nothing wrong with casual drinking, but it is like playing with fire. It's so easy to go beyond causal and make a habit out of it. What concerns me is your husband has beer cans in the back of his truck? Where is he drinking? The scary thing is, at some point he will drink too much and maybe go driving. I really can't believe it's a legal drug when so many people have problems with it.

I have included a list of good things alcohol does for our society:
