Answer:
RAY: Clearly, one of the pieces has to be one pound. I think we all agree on that.

And I think you guys thought was the next one will be three. Put one on one side and three on the other and that's two. Three pounds is obvious because he's got the three-pound thing. Four pounds is easy: he puts the three and the one together. And now we're in a lot of trouble. I'm going to say one, three, five, and whatever's left, 29 or something.

The way I stumbled upon the answer was that somehow I figured out it had to be powers of three. If it broke into four pieces, there are four powers of three between one and 40 -- three to the zero which is one, three to the one which is three, three squared which is nine, and three cubed which is 27. And that's what they are. One, three, nine, and 27. I think those are the only ones that work.

Everyone knows that the panel on an airplane is called an instrument panel because it contains all of the flight instruments, which help the pilot and co-pilot know where their plane's going.

Well, a car also has instruments but it's not called an instrument panel. We call it a dashboard. My question, very simply, is, where does the term "dashboard" come from?

RAY: Before there were cars, people used to get around using horses and buggies. The roads were dirt and when it rained they became muddy. If you were in a buggy and the horse was trotting along, the rear hooves would kick up mud. So carriages or wagons had a board that was fixed at an angle, not unlike the dashboards of cars, and it was called the "dashboard" because it did its job primarily when the horses were dashing along kicking up mud. And when they started building cars, of course, they were really adapting carriages, so the thing that they attached the instruments in the car to was called the "dashboard" because it looked just like the dashboard of a wagon.

The Metal Helmet Mystery

RAY: This puzzler suggestion came from Benjamin Schultz.

At the beginning of the First World War, the uniform of the British soldiers included a brown cloth cap. As the war went on, the Army authorities in the war office became alarmed at the high proportion of men suffering head injuries. They decided to replace the cloth headgear with metal helmets. However, the war office was then amazed to discover that there were more soldiers hospitalized with head injuries than ever before.

It can be assumed that the intensity of fighting was the same before and after the change. So, why should the recorded number of head injuries increase when the men were wearing metal helmets rather than cloth caps?

If the helmet rested on the wearer's head without a supporting framework, the energy from an impact would have been transferred directly to the wearer's skull. It is like being hit in the head by your own helmet. A supporting framework acts as a shock-absorber. (In 1980s USMC, that was called a helmet liner.)
The rim of the helmet was somewhat wider than wearing no helmet at all. That means it would have had impacts that the unhelmeted head would have dodged altogether.

RAY: And the reason is rather simple. Before the helmets, anyone that got hit with a piece of shrapnel and wearing a cloth helmet was a goner. Without the helmets, they had many more fatalities, and with the helmets, they had fewer fatalities, but more injuries.

Crusty’s Wedding Breakdown
RAY: This puzzler is about Crusty's wedding. He's been married five times and this has to do with his most recent nuptials.

On the occasion of his most recent wedding, he had to take a long trip to meet his bride-to-be. It was quite a distance away to Unadilla, N.Y. So he took his most reliable car, his '65 Falcon, and makes his way through Massachusetts onto Route 7 in New York.

He's cruising along when all of a sudden, the car backfires and dies, and he coasts to the side of the road. He realizes immediately that his points have burnt out. Luckily in his glove box is a brand-new set of ignition points.

As luck would have it, his entire tool kit is in the glove box which consists of a screwdriver, a hammer, and a jackknife. So he opens the hood and takes off the distributor cap and proceeds to remove the little screw that holds the points in. He deftly removes the screw, installs the new points...and drops the screw. Where does it go? Where it always goes! Inside the distributor!

And he can't get it out. He can see it. He can even touch it with his screwdriver, but he can't get it out. He runs to the trunk, and he finds in there the kind of stuff you usually find in the trunk.

A jack, a salami sandwich, a junky old lamp, a gallon of Filippo Berio extra virgin olive oil, and a 50-pound bag of dog food.

Using one or a combination of these things, he manages to extricate the screw from its hiding place inside the distributor within a matter of minutes. And he does not tip the car over on its roof. How does he do it?

Of course, his bride-to-be was gone when he got to the church. But he did make it. You know, the moral of the story is that you can make it if you have to, but he was a little late. He'll have to wait until his next wedding.

Don't Do It, Frank!
RAY: An off-duty policeman is working as a night watchman in an office building. He's doing his rounds and he comes upon a closed door. Behind the door he hears voices; people are talking and an argument seems to be taking place. He hears someone say, "No, Frank, no; don't do it, you'll regret it." Bang! Bang! Bang!

The night watchman bursts through the door; what does he see? A dead man on the floor. And the proverbial what? Smoking gun.

And in the room, are three living people; a minister, a doctor, and a plumber. He walks over to the minister and says, "You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent."

How does he know that it was the minister that pulled the trigger?
