Captivating

Has anyone here read the book 'Captivating' by Eldredge? And if so, would you recommend it for guys to read? I've read his book 'Wild at Heart', a book about a man's need to be a man at heart. I absolutely love it and would recommend it to everyone no matter what age or gender.

YES!!!! all my friends are talking about it. i'm going to read it as soon as i get a copy. everyone says it's like the best book!

I read it as a male. I did think that it was pretty good and fairly insightful. I don't think that it will do for females what Wild at Heart did for males. I'm not a girl though. There are definitely some cool stories in it. To me, it seems less revelatory than Wild at Heart was. Perhaps that's because I already see women clearly, or maybe it's just not as insightful into a woman's heart. I would recommend it to women at least. It does talk about a lot of reality that females don't seem to see. As I guy, I would say if you're interested you should pick it up from the library and read through it.

As with all Eldredge, you have to read it with a grain of salt, keeping in mind that he's not always the most theologically sound author in the Christian world. What he does do is provide an often unique point of view that helps a lot of other people see issues more clearly. Sometimes he thinks his ideas are revelational, when they're really a different perspective on the same thing which will have the same result as another perspective. Not to derogate him, I'm indeed one of the people who has gained clarity through reading about his perspective.

I think he's an awesome writer...I'm thinking about buying it this weekend and reading through it but I'm still going through the maker's diet...so once I finish that I'll probably pick it up...

I'll agree with that. Some of his stuff has been life changing for me, but it does need to be tested with Scripture. One of his premises is that the heart is good. That isn't in line with Scripture. Inside of us is a battle between the sinful flesh and the Spirit. We always have to do a throne check (see who is on the throne of our heart, God or us). But his books do a lot of good and I've seen them impact a lot of people in a powerful way, myself included. Worth reading, just test with Scripture.

can't agree more. I would say that his books are a good way to settle one's self into your faith, but once you are ready to "eat more solid food", his books won't fill your appetite. Wild at Heart was still a very good book, and the other 3 I also read, but there comes a point where you move on to bigger things. I also don't always like how he uses worldly things like movies etc. to illustrate spiritual wisdom....



But I think he fils a gap that needs to be filled very well. (Young believers.)
