Since Christ did in fact define who is and is not "enemy" - we find these defined in the revelation given to the Apostle Paul in Romans and 1 Corinthians. Christ's words in the 4 gospels accounts are not the final words regarding all matters of doctrine and teachings. In fact, Christ Jesus further revealed to the Apostle Paul the doctrines for the Church, the Body of Christ, today.
In Romans, Christ reveals to the Apostle Paul that we can know who the enemy is - you don't need to look past your mirror since we were defines as such in our former manner of life outside of Christ:
Romans 5:10: For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Interesting - Christ reveals to our Apostle Paul in Romans that we were [former] enemies... Christ identifies us a former enemies...yet the resurrected Christ clearly informs us that all of us were former enemies. And that is known because we all were in our former state as sinners, so anyone who is a Christ rejecter is the enemy of God and of His Christ (Messiah).
What if we lived in such a way as we pursue and proclaim the gospel of grace such as that which Jesus Christ commissioned Paul to preach and us to follow the preaching of Paul regarding Christ and Him raised from the dead.
Since it is Christ who defines who the last enemy is, we are not to be afraid to recognize who the enemies of Christ are: for to do so we then better equip ourselves to preach to them the gospel of grace for which Paul was made a minister regarding the mystery of the Church, the Body of Christ, and and declaration that we who were former enemies are now near unto God.
I Corinthians 15:26: The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
Clearly, there is value in still knowing who the enemy is: it is sin, death, and Christ rejecters. We love them precisely by freely preaching the gospel of grace and salvation to them; and admonishing them for the preaching of the gospel of grace is foolishness to the Gentiles and a stumbling block to the Jews. Preaching and teaching Bible doctrine edifies the soul and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteouness, II Timothy 3:17: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Therefore, we should be careful when we exclusively define or not define something from the gospel accounts alone; we must first search the scriptures, comparing spiritual with spiritual, and discovering if there be any additional Bible doctrine which Christ Jesus wishes us to know for our ministry today. And that ministry is the Ambassadorship for Christ in this dispensation of the grace of God.
