  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need help with a Wordpress site. I have some basic knowhow, but I really need someone (or some links that are less confusing than Wordpress's documentation lol) to help me get this site working right? Please?
You'll get more help if you say precisely and concisely as you can what your particular problems are.

Ack. Lol you're right. Um. Well, I would like to change the fonts and text colors, and I know that means downlooading and manually changing the theme, but I'm scared to death I'm gonna break something :-/

That's one. I'm gonna figure out how to describe other issues and put them in separate posts. I'm one of those step by step people. Just reading how it works isn't really helping me, I need to see it in action to really figure it out.

Sorry, but I know nothing about Wordpress. Isn't there a forum dedicated to Wordpress? You might have better luck checking them out.

With wordpress you can normally install theme from the Admin Panel.

but first a few quick questions.

1) Are you running this on your own domain or is it running from the WordPress.com site?
2) Are you experienced with PHP / CMS coding? (You'll need that to fully write your own theme)

The normal way to modify / install a theme is login as the Administrator, go to your Dashboard -> Appearance.
You can then either select from the Available Themes or Browse for New Themes. (Note to help keep your site Secure Remove Unused Themes as they can provide vectors to attack)

Now after you've found a Basic Theme / Layout you like, you can select the Editor
This will allow direct editing for the CSS file and also the PHP Files for the Templates / Theme.

I'm running it on atwebhosting.com, its a free hosting site. Its for my church, and we don't have the funds to pay for hosting.

I'm not very experienced with PHP coding. I do know some CSS, but not enough to make my own way lol

Thanks for the tip about the unused themes! I have several that I installed when I was trying to find one that suited my vision. I will delete them. A question: I have one theme for desktop sites and another for mobile. Will that leave me open, and if so, is there anything I can do?

Thanks so much for your input! I checked out the forums, but I guess I feel more comfortable asking here. I tried getting tech support from a forum once before, and all they did was post a bunch of coding I couldn't figure out how to implement.

Keep the themes up to date (And all of the Wordpress Files)
Also another good plug in to run is WordPress File Monitor Plus -> WordPress › WordPress File Monitor Plus « WordPress Plugins
Monitor files under your WP installation for changes. When a change occurs, be notified via email. This plugin is a fork of WordPress File Monitor.

It will alert the Admin to file changes. So you can help keep an eye on the site.

What's the current theme you're using ?

Thank you! I'm using 2010 for desktop, and DailyPost for mobile.

One thing about the mobile site, if you could help, I'd like to remove the widgets from it, the archives and the login pieces at the bottom. The site isn't really for a blog, but I needed wordpress for some of its plugins. As I said, I know a bit of PHP, but I couldn't figure out what I need to change to remove it.

Also, when I checked the site on a basic phone, the banner showed up with a different aspect ratio, and I'm lost there as well.

Thank you!

Send me a PM with the site URL, and I'll see what I can do.
I'm doing some coding for work right now so I won't be able to fully look / change any files right now, but give me a day or two & I should be able to provide you what needs to be changed, and instructions on how to change it.
