  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello all!

What do we all think?

Should virtue/morality be taught in school? And more essentially CAN virtue/morality be taught in schools?

Thanks for your time, Sarah x
Currently, attempts are being made to teach moralities/values in schools, but there is debate over whether those moralities/values contradict with each other and whether they are moral or not.

I pay taxes to educate my children of facts not someone's version of ideology, the government has not proven itself to be trustworthy of teaching morality or values... that is my domain and responsibility as a parent.

What he said. The kids will pick up behaviors and attitudes at school regardless--it's impossible not to in a social setting--but the minute you start trying to "enforce" or "teach" morality as part of the ciricculum, the question becomes: whose morality? Can parents opt their child out of morality training, if their family values conflict with what is being taught? Who decides on the reigning moral code, anyway?

basic morality and values should be taught in schools and is as far as i am aware, i do think however that this teacjng should be free from religious overtones as many are taught their own religious morals seperately through their places of worship

If we are talking about the difference between bad and good then yes no problem with that. However if we are talking about such things as whether Masturbation is a sin, whether you should have pre marital sex that sort of thing then I think no as everyone has their own view on this and that will cloud what you teach.

Whose morality? If it is mine, feel free to teach it. If it is opposed to mine, no way.

I don't think schools should try and teach morality. They should, however, teach children to recognize and understand their own innate empathy. Children should learn to understand how their actions affect others. It is difficult to understand why being a bully is bad if no one ever points it out to you.
