Am I allowed to hate my enemies and still be a Christian?

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you" (Luke 6:27)
"Do not resist an evil person." (Matthew 5:39)
"So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." (John 2:15)

Why would anyone want to hate someone?

Jesus said that Jewish teaching is that you should love your neighbors and hate your enemies. This is quite reasonable. Asking why someone would hate is quite naive and silly since it is human nature to sin.

Apparently, Jesus can whip things and still love them. Apparently, Jesus can overturn peoples property and destroy peoples property and still love them. Apparently, Jesus can **** people to lakes of fire and sulfur and still love them. So if I Crusade against the infidels in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Holy Land, can I still love them? Even if I hate them, can I not still be saved?

WM, I dread to even get into this with you, and probably shouldn't.

Can you please explain to me how turning over some tables and driving people out of the area with a whip is the same as carpet-bombing whole populations, including women and children?

The bible says in Matthew 43-48

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Also to hate would mean you are judging another person and God will judge you the same.

Don't confuse hate with tough love. I can correct someone with Gods love but I cannot hate them.

Remember Christ in you means love and not hatred.
When did Jesus hate? Even when he was crucified and prayed
Father please forgive them..for they know not what they do..

Hate is darkness.. and you can't walk in the light and in darkness.

The person you hate needs prayer and may be satans prisoner. Only God's love may change them, not gods hate.

I hope this helps..

God Bless you

You're really stuck on that money changers incident, huh?

Here's how it is. I love my children. Sometimes they disobey me, and I have to punish them. Punishing them doesn't mean I hate them; actually, NOT punishing them is a sign that I really don't love them much at all.

God's chastisement does not mean he hates the chastised. On the contrary, it is a sign of His love.

Now, to the original question: No, it is not Christian to hate. Hate is a sin. That doesn't mean that Christians never hate anyone. It just means that Christians are broken, imperfect sinners just like everyone else.

I second alexuno's post.

There goes a poem...I think it appropiate to show how one can hurt (perhaps more accurately rendered 'discipline') another for ultimate good:

When God wants to drill a man,

And thrill a man,

And skill a man

To play the noblest part;

When He yearns with all His heart

To create so great and bold a man

That all the world shall be amazed,

Watch His methods, watch His ways!

How He ruthlessly perfects

Whom He royally elects!

How He hammers him and hurts him,

And with mighty blows converts him

Into trial shapes of clay which

Only God understands;

While his tortured heart is crying

And he lifts beseeching hands!

How He bends but never breaks

When his good He undertakes;

How He uses whom He chooses,

And which every purpose fuses him;

By every act induces him

To try His splendor out-

God knows what He's about.

Have you ever heard of "righteous indignation"? It's where you are allowed to hate enemies of God & people opposed to Christ, which all non Christians are, actually.

You quoted good Scripture verses, there are tons more in the Psalms.That's why a lot of evanjellyfish churches refuse to sing them: too mean sounding. Read through Psalms 83,59,94,55 etc. If it were sin for us to long for God's judgment on the wicked, there would be no impreccatory Psalms in the Scriptures. 'Are we allowed to hate people' isn't the right question. 'How do we hate God's enemies Biblically' is a bettter one.

Here's what happens when you hate people with God's hatred for sin, and pray against them with impreccations. Either God kills them in the fullness of His time and they suffer the righteous judgment of God in hell eternal; or Christ takes the punishment on their behalf at the cross, and rather than death, they convert & receive eternal life, Christ having taken their hell for them on then cross.

Happy hating!

Do a Bible word search on hate/vengence and you will find that we don't have a right to it only God does.

Watching THE PASSION movie this week reminded me while Jesus was on the cross, abused, mistreated, beaten....He didn't say Father GET THEM FOR WHAT THEY DID TO ME!....no His words were Father, forgive them for they not know what they do.

God said...Vengence is His. He has a righteous vengence and he can do a lot better job than we ever could.

1 Samuel 24:12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
Proverbs 20:22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Isaiah 35:3 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.
4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

Jeremiah 11:20 But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause

WHAT DOES GOD TELL US TO DO......

Matthew 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

I need to clarify that I know God is a God of love and hate if from Satan. What I was saying that God is a just God and he can rightly revenge wrong doing. There are lots of scriptures that tell us we need to control our anger/hate and let God take care of the situation for us. Sometimes we want to help him out especially when something has happened to us or someone we love and care about.

Why Forgive

I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
Matthew 5:44-45

Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they have something to forgive, as we had during WWll. And then, to mention the subject at all is to be greeted with howls of anger. It is not that people think this is too high and difficult a virtue: it is they think it is hateful and contemptable. "That sort of talk makes me sick," they say. And half of you already want to ask me, "I wonder how you'd feel about forgiving the Gestapo if you were a Pole or a Jew?"

So do I. I wonder very much. Just as when Christianity tells me that I must not deny my religion even to save myself from death by torture, I wonder very much what I should do when it came to the point. I am not trying to tell you in this book what I could do- I can do precious little- I am telling you what Christianity is. I did not invent it. And there, right in the middle of it, I find, "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." There is no slightest suggestion that we are offered forgiveness on any other terms. It is made perfectly clear that if we do not forgive we shall not be forgiven. There are no two ways about it.

Forgiving Father, give me the spirit of forgiveness even when I would rather nurture my wounds than have them healed.

If mass murderers, men who are attracted to women (adulterers), and homosexuals can repent and be saved, why can't I hate my enemies and be saved?

hmm, but the key word is repent... which means to turn around and walk in the opposite direction.

if one commits a sin (say hate) and stubbornly refuses to repent of it, how is that a fruit that reveals Christ is in them? fruit of the spirit - love joy peace....

i think it is a fine line (or no dividing line at all) between acceptable "christian hate" - ie: hating your parents - and "true christian LOVE"... we are NOT to hate our parents, but COMPARED to our LOVE for CHRIST, they fall so far behind that it might as well almost be called "hate".... but as we know, love knows no bounds, and even though our love for Jesus is supposed to be way, way, WAY beyond our love for our parents, there is still enough love in us (by His grace!!!) to love our parents, and our enemies, too.

If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26).....

i think its more of a resentment that pure soulish hatred that He is requiring of us, based on Christs other teachings on love... and would it be possible that He is teaching us that we are to resent them because they ARE NOT God? because they, in so many ways, hold us back from Him?

hmmm. a few of my thoughts. interesting thread....
