Can God give us prophetic dreams? Not the kind that predicts the future of the world, but dreams to predict the future passing of a loved one. I believe about a month ago, I had such a dream. Thoughts and comments are accepted. Thanks!

Well, I've had dreams about the future of my family and they all came to pass... =)

Here are the symbolic things in my dream dealing with my Uncle.

Telephone: (either my dad calls me about my Uncle's death or he received a call about His brother's death, which was my uncle.)
Ashes: In the dream, my Dad was shoveling ashes.
Chinese Restaurant: In The dream, my dad invites to a Chinese restaurant.

Here is how the events played out:

12/24/2010: My dad calls ,me that morning and he meets me later in Battle Ground, Wa and we go to Happy Family Chinese restaurant for lunch. While there, I think about my dream and my Uncle Mike.
12/25/2010: May dad takes care of His Wood Stove and soon afterward he receives a phone call that his brother Mike, passed that morning and later, it was told that His brother would be cremated.

There is the dream and the explanation of the events that transpired.

No. Now that we have the completed canon of scripture, God no longer speaks to us in this way.

You should go visit the dreams and visions forum here -- people hear from God daily, and share insights on each others' dreams.

Dreams & Visions - Christian Forums

God interacts with us all the time; some days it sounds like a still small voice in our heads, sometimes it's scriptures that stand out, and sometimes it comes in other forms. There are no laws for how God will communicate with us.

The New Testament says that "in those days" (future) people will dream dreams and see visions... and the book of Revelation itself is a vision that occurred after Jesus' resurrection. God doesn't stop working in our lives.

As for prophetic, try to think about purpose instead of gift. If God wants to be thoughtful and prepare you for emotional trauma, He can bring tidbits of information like that, helping you work through it and pray before it happens.

The dream is not the end in itself, but the communication.

People who want to start a career in fortune-telling will think about prophecy as a gifting. But a believer in daily walk with God will just see the gift as something that needs to be given away.

When I was 24 years old I had an experience I will never forget. Anyone reading can make of it what he/she will.

I was sitting cross legged against the wall of my bedroom reading the bible. There was nothing extraordinary about the day. As I was reading the bible something thick and heavy came over me and in my sprirt I saw an airplane fall from the sky. It came crashing through my bedroom wall and into me. I was so horrified and confused that I ran into my roommate's bedroom and started raving hysterically and I told her what I had seen. And that I believed that something bad was going to happen. She calmed me down and assured me that calling the airport was the worst thing I could do. I agreed and then just prayed. For the rest of the night I was dumbstruck by what I had "seen".

Well the very next day, about 20 miles north, a small Cessna collided with a commercial airliner and fell into a track of homes, killing several and all aboard the planes.

I have absoolutely no idea why I "saw" this happen but if anyone asks me does God speak to people through dreams, or visions, my answer is obviously Yes.

Thankfully, that was the first, and last, thing I have ever "seen" before it happened.

It wasn't a dream. Perhaps you could have read what I wrote before you spouted off. I'm not going to debate with you no matter how much you're itching for a fight. You've made up your mind about theological matters and that's fine. And after this childish sputter of yours I've just made up my mind about you. So we're even. Happy new years by the way.

Thanks for sharing.

Does make you wonder, I have found there are no coincidences, God is in control of everything.

As for the OP God definately gives dreams and visions, whether they are thing going to happen or whether we can effect them I do not know.

Then how do you explain the Bible's teaching that God speaks through the scriptures, and not through subjective, esoteric experiences?

You can try as much as you like , you do not believe so you take scripture as you feel you should.
I have experienced too much to deny any of it.

My purpose is a relationship with God, that means He talks to us, interacts with us, heals us etc.

But if you're going to claim to be a Christian, then shouldn't you have at least a passing interest in seeing that your doctrine is sound?

You obviously have different ideas than me, I respect that ,
I do think discussing it here will be of any use, also I think we should stick to the OP and not hijack this thread agrueing whos doctrine is right.

You're right. I'm sorry. You were in a trance, not having a dream.

Now there's some irony for you.

Bro Sam, you wrote this in another thread - yes I have been reading your posts. I find people's words interesting. Anyway you wrote this:

*Jesus is the foundation of the Church. Jesus commissioned the Church. Jesus ordained the Church. Jesus died for the Church. Jesus is coming to claim the Church as His bride.

We disagree on a few issues. Let's just leave it there and celebrate what we have in common, which is a lot*. Fair enough? I would rather have kindness between us based on the truth you point out above then to bicker over doctorinal differences.

Olive branch?

The idea of deferring to the authority of scripture for our doctrine, or getting our doctrine from subjective and esoteric experience is a pretty serious difference.

Olive branch?

Accepted.

There is no argument. The Bible's doctrine is right.
