i don't think it is the music itself that is sinful......but the lyrics are. Music can be soothing, edifying and spiritually uplifting, depending on what the lyrics are saying to you. If u find that this particular type of music (heavy metal) is giving u an unchrist like attitude or mood.....then it would be considered sinful. Basically any type of music is ok......depending on what the message is.

Music whether instrumental, vocal, lyric, rift whatever can be sinful when it glorifies self or contravenes what you believe in God. I don't believe all secular music is sinful, but a great deal is.

Funnily enough I preached a sermon on the purpose of music today as part of our worship to God. I am of the opinion that if the holy Spirit is indwelling it is very important that we check what we allow into our minds.

It is easy to single out certain forms of music genre as evil but inherently it is about what effect that music has on you and your spiritual wellbeing. Some music forms like rap, metal, grunge historically have attracted a "lifestyle" which appears almost rebellious to Christianity but I am of the belief that God can use almost all music (not noise) which is innovative rather than a pale imitation of secular to bring us into understanding how awesome he is

My two cents.......

As a club/rave DJ, I often battle with the content of some of the music that comes out. As a rule, I refuse to play music that is degrading, sexually perverse or that glorifies greed and lust.

It's something that has been getting increasingly difficult to do in the last few years and has me searching and praying for answers about whether or not I should be doing this for a living at all. There are a lot of positive aspects to dance music and dancing in a social setting and I don't think there is any passage in a bible that states "though shall not have fun." The obvious problems with dancing in social settings is the amount of temptation and peer pressure good Christians are forced to deal with. Especially when you have icons encouraging un-Christian like behaviour.

I don't know if anyone as seen the latest Christina Aguilera video but it scares me that media and music has gone to this extreme to sell albums. What scares me even more is the fact the target of artists like this are young girls in their very early and very impressionable youth. How does a young confused teenager battle against messages of completely depraved carnality when it's an adult, one that is supposed to be setting an example, sending out these messages.

It's not the music that carries sin, music is God's gift to us. It's those who lack moral character that corrupt and pollute this gift. It's big business who say they're only giving people what they want when in actual fact, they're pushing the envelope to create hype so they can tell consumers that they'll be missing out if they don't purchase their product. Everything is bought and paid for before it reaches the consumer and unfortunately, most people, especially those who are impressionable and lacking in the guidance that you can recieve from being a practicing Christian, are doing what they're told by the media.

I am fight a clock and dont have time to give you a course in music. But I find it more than a little interesting that any subjest you come up with, the Bible has all the answers too. INCLUDING this one. You will find your ansers believe it or not in the Book of Chronicles. Interesting the things you will find there. Did you know David had a 4,000 memer Orchestra. That he made all the instruments and wrote all the music?

As for your Heavy metal music, YES, of course it is sinful and has no place in the life of a Christian.

The sin is in the words, however. I do not think that going on stage and hitting a trash can with drumsticks, for example, attracts any more demons or is any more sinful than playing a piano. In fact, if the garbage-can player is singing about salvation through faith by grace in Jesus, and the piano player is singing about a physical relationship, the garbage-can player would actually be less sinful.

It's absolutely true. Rock music is evil. That heavy metal music is from the devil himself. When I was five years old i accidentally heard KISS and it ruined me. I listened to it ever since then...all that rock and heavy metal music. Now I am locked in a world of darkness. I study New Testament Greek and actually like it. I think I want to teach it when I get through seminary. Don't be like me. Don't listen to rock music. Repent now! Listen to southern gospel quartets played with an out of tune piano. Hang up Bill Gaither posters in your room.
God help me I read my bible.
There is no hope.

Mr. Cheese,

I am also one who has been tarnished by evil music. I heard a song by this band called Rage Against the Machine. It was very much against law enforcement and government. Then I heard more. And more. I got so intrigued by this evil governmental law enforcement moster of which they spoke, that after serving my country for 5 years I became one to see what it was all about. I spend my days upholding law and assisting people with medical emergencies. Who knows how much better a person I could have become had I never tainted my ears with those lyrics? Protect your ears, young ones.

Some hymns arent scriptural either and shouldnt be sung. So I'd say pay attention to the lyrics and also what the particular type of music promotes.

eg even if a havy rock metal grp produces a song that sounds neutral, i still wldnt listen to it if the group's members/leaders worship satan, curse God, use drugs etc. why support them by buying their music. I have better things to listen to.

Consider the following Bible verse:

"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."  -- Colossians 2:8 (NIV)

Ask yourself the question of whether or not a certain type of music glorifies God.  Be sure to take into account the lyrics that are presented in the music, and see whether or not they are clean.  Also check out the sound of the music, because even the sound in itself (without the lyrics) is enough to create an atmosphere, whether positive or negative.

Hey Sunstone,

since you r familiar with Christian rock are u familiar with the group called Pod?

I heard its a Christian rock grp but when I saw them on MTV, I just cldnt find anything Christlike abt them. I mean they were screaming, so I cldnt hear the lyrics, looked angry and were covered with tattoos, piercings and long hair. In one of their stage performances they had these huge ugly looking faces/statues flanking their stage.

Is that another group altogether??

Although I don't like POD, just because something is "ugly" or does not "look good" does not make it unChristlike BTW.

For instance the event which secured our salvation, the death of our Lord and Savior Jesus, especially to someone who was watching knowing nothing of the Resurrection to come, would not have "looked good." In fact, it would have been a scene of utter agony and pain beyond even what most of us could think. Many (or dare I say all) of us, had we actually been at the cross on that day, we would have even averted our eyes for at least a second.

I am not comparing a spiritually corrupt human band to Jesus (far be it from me to do so!): I am only requesting that the judgment of unChristlikeness be made on deeds, not appearances. We will NOT be judged on physical appearance in the end day.

Music definitely has an affect on your life.

As to the actual genre of music, it's not evil in and of itself, however, it may have a pretty bad connotation :) Most rap, for example, isn't so hot. :p

And some of the genres I would not call music ;)

Lyrics are definitely what makes music "Christian" or non Christian. Non-Christian music is not bad in an of itself, either.

Bach wrote a lot of non Christian music :p
