  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Can anyone recommend me...

Good Miles Davis stuff in general or good Miles Davis fusion stuff?
Good Miles fusion to me would be In a Silent Way, Complete B-----es Brew Sessions, Black Beauty, Live-Evil, Dark Magus, Agharta... Pretty much anything from 1969-1975.
Other fusion can be a bit iffy, depending on your personal tastes. John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra were very "prog-rockish" in their use of odd time signatures and complex arrangements. Chick Corea's Return to Forever started out as a pretty smooth Afro-Brazilian-jazz group and morphed into something harder-edged a la Mahavishnu in the late 70s. Weather Report was probably the most eclectic sounding of the big fusion groups of the 70s, but IMHO this eclecticism was a little hit-or-miss. Oregon was a weird world/chamber/jazz fusion group, the couple albums of theirs I've heard have been really cool in a very non-traditional way. Shakti was terrific, another John McLaughlin project with several musicians from India.
I haven't really heard much 80s fusion that I've liked, so I won't comment on that.
My picks:
Mahavishnu Orchestra-- The Inner Mounting Flame; Birds of Fire
Return to Forever-- Light as a Feather; Romantic Warrior
Weather Report-- Black Market; Heavy Weather; 8:30
Oregon-- The Essential Oregon
Shakti-- Shakti

As indicated by Spacedout, John McLaughlin is a great jazz fusion guitarist and actually played guitar on Miles Davis' B___es Brew. My favorite John McLaughlin albums are Vision of the Emerald Beyond and his comeback album in the 80's called simply Mahavishnu with Jonas Hellborg on bass. As a guitarist myself, I was thinking about getting John's DVD set on mastering improvisation.

Here are some great guitarists to check out that play jazz fusion

Allen Holdsworth
Scott Henderson
Larry Coryell
Jean Luc Ponty (Electric violin used a lead guitar)
Steve Morse
Pat Metheny
The late great Shawn Lane

I'm not sure if I'm looking for fusion or just jazz...but I'm not a huge fan of old jazz..such as 30's and 40's jazz...I'll check those out thanks!

1930s-40s jazz vs. 1970s fusion? Apples and oranges, man...

For fusion jazz I recommend Al DiMeola. Buy his compilation CD, "Anthology", or buy the song "Nena", it's good introduction to his work. Even people who thought they could never listen to jazz usually get addicted to DiMeola.

Few people are more skilled with the guitar than him. You'll literally be in awe when you first hear "Land of the Midnight Sun".

Kind of Blue is the one to get if you haven't listened to any Miles before... it is a fine, fine record!

It's the one to get even if you don't intend on listening to Miles ever again. It's simply one of the albums you have to have.

I've been digging a lot of the ECM jazz from the '70s lately-- Terje Rypdal, John Abercrombie, Jan Garbarek, Dave Holland, Ralph Towner, Metheny's Bright Size Life, et al. A nice mix of fusion and free-jazz...

I love Miles Davis from say '55 through to '62. Milestones is one of my favourite albums of his. Sketches of Spain, Kind of Blue, Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead, Round About Midnight, Someday My Prince Will Come are all good albums
