Greetings brothers and sisters, some of you may have noticed that I pop in here occasionally to ask your opinion on resources, etc. Though I am not a Calvinist I have been taking it upon myself to learn more about Calvinism as you all are very dear brethren in the faith despite some of the historic vitriol that has existed between our communions.
Earlier this year I finished Ursinus' Commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism and think that Calvin's Institutes ought to be next (perhaps they should have preceded Ursinus). The problem is that unlike Ursinus, there are many translations and editions of the Institutes. My question is how much this should matter as I consider plumbing Calvin's writings. I have seen two-volume editions from the Latin, an edition from the French and don't know enough to do anything beside take the publishers at their word.
Do you all have any advice? Are some editions more authoritative and/or better or is it just a matter of taste and preference?
Thank you all in advance!
